I fucking hate Ohio government. Today, DeWine finally decided to declare a state of emergency to (& this is his choice of words) "expedite" assistance. 5 fucking days after we had 4 tornadoes, 1 macroburst, & 300,000+ residences without power in August. Locals already did the hardest parts. 🤬

The NWS confirms a MACROBURST from Saturday afternoon for the #Springfield area. Peak winds ~70 mph.
Macro & microbursts aren't uncommon in Western Mass. & Berkshires.
A macroburst is straight-line wind damage over at least 2.5 miles. A microburst is more localized.

A cluster of severe storms produced a macroburst over the city of Springfield, Massachusetts Saturday evening. Macrobursts form the same way as the more common microbursts, but are larger area-wise ( greater than 2.5 miles wide). This spreads the severe damage over a greater area. #MAwx

I heard this thing fall and it scared me to my core. Bad storms. Bad. 4 tornados and a macroburst (my house was in the macroburst). Second pic is a tree down the road resting on some power lines.

Comparing 2 the last 2 significant severe weather events. There was a brief tornado on July 5, but the 3 mile-wide macroburst caused the biggest problems. Tuesday's tornado was a bit weaker and not nearly as wide as the macroburst. It very photogenic!

See my "Geeks" video from earlier this evening for a discussion of the July 5 event. It would have been preferable to have a longer-lived tornado and no macroburst. The damage would have been in a 1/2 mile wide path and not 3+ miles wide. Arrow shows tornado path.

It was a macroburst. 80mph winds. She's fine, kept her electricity, and house, and car, but everyone else has nothing.
