Is there generality in decomposition across substrates? We tested this in an experiment across elevation, studying carrion, dung, leaves & wood. We found idiosynchratic patterns of decomp, with local conditions being more important than macroclimate @sebseibold.bsky.social doi.org/10.1002/ecm....

At the time, humans were "on the verge of exerting meaningful influence over macroclimate."

Good times.

What is more interesting these gaps in sections reveal similar scaling regimes to that of surface temperatures, with scaling breaks and crossovers between macroweather-climate, climate-macroclimate, macroclimate-megaclimate time scales.

Microenvironmental variability differently predicts microorganism‐ and fauna‐driven litter decomposition
Our study focused on local-scale variation in litter decomposition using a spatially explicit and untargeted network of 113 plots across a 9-ha Chinese fir forest. Interestingly, we found variation i....

We built a simple metric that synthesized #forest #microclimate #processes by linking air T°C in the understory, #microclimate, to air T°C from a nearby weather station, #macroclimate, before extracting the slope coefficient & log-transform it, so that negative values mean a #buffering effect

Just accepted! Our review led by @linegreis.bsky.social in @globalchangebio.bsky.social examines how climate change drives microclimate changes as experienced by life on Earth 🌍🌡️🥵 While waiting for the final publication, you can check out our preprint version: doi.org/10.5281/zeno...
Climate change experienced by life on Earth - drivers and mechanisms of future trends in microclimates
Microclimate affects organisms more directly than macroclimate, yet its long-term dynamics and drivers of decadal microclimate changes remain underexplored in ecology and global change biology. The general assumption is that microclimatic changes track macroclimate trends. However, changes in meteorological conditions (e.g., cloud cover, wind patterns) and vegetation dynamics (e.g., canopy thinning, desertification in drylands, shrub encroachment in the tundra) associated with climate change can lead to locally divergent microclimate trends, thereby altering spatial variability. Understanding and quantifying how climate change observed in standardized weather stations translates to fine-scale microclimate change experienced by organisms, populations and communities is therefore essential for predicting ecological responses to global environmental change.     This review examines how macroclimate change drives microclimate changes as experienced by life on Earth - and how these micro-scale changes may, in turn, feed back into the regional and global climate system. While our primary focus is on near-surface air and soil temperature - due to their relevance to most terrestrial organisms and ecosystem processes - we also discuss other tightly linked key climatic variables such as humidity and radiation. The review is structured around three pathways of microclimate changes: (I) direct effects of changes in meteorological conditions, (II) indirect effects via vegetation changes, and (III) feedbacks between microclimate and climate change. Using three mechanistic model simulations in real-world landscapes, we exemplify and quantify the key mechanisms that lead to divergent warming trends. By integrating perspectives from meteorology, climate science, and ecology, this review advances our understanding of the feedbacks between the biosphere, pedosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere. We argue that deciphering microclimate change is crucial to bridging the gap between climate science and its application in global change biology.

Microclimates, or microrefugia, may help buffer insect populations from extreme weather, highlighting the importance of fine-scale habitat management in conservation strategies under climate change. doi.org/g9vthk
Micro refugia could be key to survival of insect populations
Microclimates—as opposed to large-scale regional or even global scale macroclimate models—may hold the key to offsetting the negative impacts of extreme weather events on already vulnerable insect populations.

We also show how using microclimate KG's better matches land use patterns than macroclimate KG's. This calls for us to reconsider what is "tropical" or "polar" climate, and to use ecologically-relevant microclimate data in our research.

Since 1884, Köppen-Geiger (KG) classes have been used in environmental research, and in education to teach how "desert", "rainforest", "polar", regions differ in climates. We used the same KG rules, but with 2 climate sources: macroclimate (ERA5), & below-canopy microclimate (the microclimf model).

"Microclimate temperatures were amplified close to the ground, whereas at 50 cm height temperatures were more stable and similar to the macroclimate temperature".

Ground temperatures can be extreme, well above ambient air temperature we see reported. Quite a few plants in that height zone.

Is it hot where you live today? While we aren't able to change the macroclimate quickly, people are beginning to address the Heat Island Effect in their neighborhoods. For the benefit of every species (including our own), we need more of this everywhere!
