In 1903, Maggie Lena Walker founded the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank, which became the longest-running Black-owned bank in U.S. history.

Today, that legacy lives on as Peoples Bank in Richmond, Virginia.

After the Civil War, Black voting rights expanded;Virginia’s 1901–02 Constitution imposed poll taxes and literacy tests to disenfranchise Black voters. Weeks before it took effect, Maggie Lena Walker launched The St. Luke Herald, using the Black press to inform, unite & empower.
