🚨😱🤯

This is… worrisome, to say the least… 😰
SW community already faces enough stigma from outside; seeing it replicated within is… 💔

High-risk, low-income, full-service, or trans sex workers deserve to be heard as well.
Specially when that's an ‘and’.

🧵(1/3)
[Twitter/X post by TS Jelena Vermilion (@IsisIntrepid) on Aug 24, 2025 at 9:23 PM UTC; 1/2] Trans and Non-Binary Sex Workers Demand Accountability from Major Canadian Non-Profits FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE A coalition of over two dozen trans sex worker activists, peer workers, and community leaders across Canada are calling out systemic transmisogyny, exclusion, and structural violence within the country’s largest sex work non-profits. Organizations such as @maggiestoronto, @pacesociety, Stella Montreal (@AmiEsdeStella) and the @CDNSWAlliance have built reputations and secured funding off the labour and stories of trans sex workers — particularly Black and Indigenous trans women — while silencing, tokenizing, and discarding us. A clear example is Monica Forrester (@tsmoni), a trans woman and peer leader who was fired despite decades of dedicated service, illustrating the ongoing retaliation against trans workers who challenge cis-dominated leadership. These harms are not isolated. They reflect hostile governance, tokenization, and gatekeeping, causing devastating consequences: loss of employment and income, reputational damage, social isolation, retraumatization, and even immigration challenges. Our labour has been erased, our stories stolen, and funds misused in ways that directly harm the most marginalized in our communities. We will no longer tolerate transmisogynistic non-profits claiming to represent us. […] [🐦🛡️ https://xcancel.com/IsisIntrepid/status/1959728419295441107] [🐦🕸️ https://x.com/IsisIntrepid/status/1959728419295441107] [Twitter/X post by TS Jelena Vermilion (@IsisIntrepid) on Aug 24, 2025 at 9:23 PM UTC; 2/2] […] Our Demands We demand these organizations: •Restructure leadership to include Black and Indigenous trans sex workers in paid, decision-making roles. •Implement transparent accountability processes for transmisogyny and anti-Blackness, led by trans sex workers. •Enforce protections against retaliation, exclusion, and erasure. •Redistribute resources to trans-led initiatives, not cis-dominated leadership circles. •Issue public accountability statements acknowledging harm and outlining concrete repair. Call to Action We urge: •The public to withhold trust until demands are met •Funders to stop financing groups profiting from trans labour while perpetuating exclusion •Media to report honestly on this systemic violence •Allies to amplify trans and non-binary voices and trans-led initiatives We Demand Justice! [🐦🛡️ https://xcancel.com/IsisIntrepid/status/1959728419295441107] [🐦🕸️ https://x.com/IsisIntrepid/status/1959728419295441107] [Twitter/X post by C.O.R.A’S (@corasottawa) on Aug 24, 2025 at 10:01 PM UTC; 1/2] Was asked to share, and groups like SWAP Hamilton (run by a trans SWer) are the under-represented demographic in SW we exist to serve and help raise their voices. If they are struggling with feeling supported they need and deserve to be heard. There is an ongoing concern with how government-funded nonprofits often channel more money into salaries for non-sex workers than into programs that truly support the communities they claim to serve. While we cannot and do not speak about all listed organizations, especially as we have not come into contact with most of them, we can verify that we have directly experienced discrimination at Maggie’s, where members/users of CORAS and SWAP Hamilton (unsure why they were brought up but Maggie’s did mention them) were told by the director they were not welcome to use their services or participate within the organization, prior to receiving unprofessional emails suggesting we be ignored and referring to us as “those people”. This raises serious red flags about transparency and accountability in organizations receiving public funding for sex workers, when large groups of marginalized sex workers are told explicitly they are not welcome. Warning our clients if they use Maggie’s not to mention they’ve used CORAS for support is heartbreaking. It also underscores why funding should be directed to groups that are genuinely sex worker-led and employ people from the communities they represent. […] [🐦🛡️ https://xcancel.com/corasottawa/status/1959737971344650724] [🐦🕸️ https://x.com/corasottawa/status/1959737971344650724] [Twitter/X post by C.O.R.A’S (@corasottawa) on Aug 24, 2025 at 10:01 PM UTC; 2/2] […] The fact that such organizations are sidelined highlights how nonprofits can misuse social systems to protect their own positions at the expense of the very demographics they are meant to support. We want sex workers to thrive, and we do want groups like Maggie’s to thrive and support their community- but not when they are picking and choosing which sex workers are palatable enough to support, and refusing to put FSSW on salary. Hopefully that’s changed. Jelena has done incredible work for the SW community in Ontario and we deeply appreciate her support with CORAS- support we often struggle to receive. “Nothing about us, without us”. Our board is fully marginalized sex workers. We don’t take a salary. No one is barred from our services. We do not take elitist stances against vulnerable sex workers. We take care of our own and we are proud of it. Attached: an email from Maggie’s (the chairs name is publically listed on several websites in connection to Maggie’s) that was never addressed, reminding us that the whorearchy is alive, well, and upheld by organisations meant to support us. We wish the best for groups like Maggie’s- it’s crucial that SWer groups exist. We just would appreciate if they wanted the same for marginalized SWers. [Capture with the following text:] 🙄 see below… I don't know why they haven't cc'ed u on their response. we might wanna deal with this after AGM or never. I don't have much tolerance for these people anymore Asya Gunduz (she-her) Chair at Maggie's Toronto, Lead, Trans and Gender Diverse People HIV Prevention and Health Promotion at the OHTN M.A in Gender Studies [🐦🛡️ https://xcancel.com/corasottawa/status/1959737971344650724] [🐦🕸️ https://x.com/corasottawa/status/1959737971344650724]

The work that @MaggiesToronto and @UHN are doing to get Torontonians vaccinated is so incredible and necessary. If you cannot go to a city-run clinic or pharmacy for ANY REASON, please look into one of their clinics. I hope all cities have groups like @MaggiesToronto.
