His memory of the event was foggy. They successfully escaped the trap at the Eastern Warp Tunnel, passed through the belt, and nearly reached the first bridge, when the federation rumbler appeared from nowhere. Rumblers were powerful but small vessels; meant for battle and not designed to take prisoners. Marco didn’t know if it was another trap or just a patrol.

He found himself dawdling outside the nursery a little longer every day, as if going inside that room somehow constituted a betrayal against his father. As if someone would be able to see just how much he longed to crawl into the safety of the sleeping pads and comforting arms of the nursery maids and attend school no longer.
