Superluminous supernovae! We used to think they were powered by black holes. Turns out some are powered by magnetars, neutron stars with magnetic fields 1,000x stronger than usual. SN 2017egm, 440 million light-years away, proves it. The Earth is exciting, but space is too! 🤯
NASA's Fermi Telescope Finds Neutron Stars (Magnetars) Powering Superluminous Supernovae
New gamma-ray observations from NASA's Fermi Space Telescope suggest that highly-magnetic neutron stars, known as magnetars, are the hidden engines behind superluminous supernovae, a rare class of ste

Still not aliens: Astronomers think they’ve found a plausible explanation of the Wow! signal. Magnetars could zap clouds of atomic hydrogen, producing focused microwave beams. arstechnica.com/science/2024...

M81. This galaxy is thought to harbor magnetars, which are a type of dense neutron star with powerful magnetic fields. Magnetars may be the origin of the still mysterious fast radio bursts. At the bottom of the photo is the Cigar Galaxy. ~3hrs exposure on my tiny scope!

Magnetars are neutron stars -- they just have these unbelievably strong magnetic fields, much stronger than other neutron stars. These powerful magnetic fields produce weird behaviour, like X-ray bursts and giant flares.

Magnetars are cool, but also, terrifying.

What causes the difference between a neutron star and a magnetar?

The universe possesses unimaginable, terrifying power - supernovae, black holes, and magnetars. Incomprehensible energy and distance - spacetime, nebulae, quantum foam, galaxies and dark matter - and then it went....

...yes but also how about bunnies.

Don’t get me started on magnetars.
There are a billion neutron stars in our galaxy, each one a Sun compacted to the size of a city! One teaspoon of neutron star material has 900 times the mass of The Great Pyramid of Giza! Drop an object from a height of 1 meter and it would hit the surface at 4.5 million mph! Their magnetic fields a

Going to invent a guitar that has magnets below the strings and when the strings vibrate within the magnetic field it will make an ELECTRIC SIGNAL thus I will call this Magnet Guitar a MAGNETAR

*wait. I’m being told…*

I’m happy to say magnetars are already available.

I think the current tentative consensus is something more like extra spicy magnetars
