Hello=) Lopud, island off the coast of Dalmatia, southern Croatia. Beautiful stone buildings! The trees are majestic, including the large-flowered magnolia, a species of flowering plant in the family Magnoliaceae. Large tree, probably because of its beautiful evergreen leaves.

=) Lopud !

A fallen Liriodendrites occidentalis, a Cretaceous species related to our extant Tulip Trees (Magnoliaceae), is a rare treat for the relatively small Ceratopsian Turanoceratops, whos' fossils were found at the Bissekty Formation of Uzbekistan.

Magnolias are much used as ornamental, flowering trees. I like the deciduous, yellow-flowered cultivars very much, even though their flowering period is brief. This is ‘Butterflies’, a cultivar of an interspecific cross. #Magnoliaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Let’s take a look at Magnoliaceae. Named for Pierre Magnol, who gave us the modern concept of plant families. There are now just 2 genera, distributed in Asia & the Americas: Magnolia s.l. (📷2: M. cylindrica) & Liriodendron (📷3: L. tulipifera). #Magnoliaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

This Magnolia stellata 'Scented Silver' has an actinomorphic or radially symmetrical flower. You can find many ways to divide the flower into two equal halves. #Magnoliaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Who loves the #tropics more than we do? Magnolias, apparently😜🍹💮
Xie et al. show that higher diversification rate, rather than longer speciation time, explains the high #diversity of Magnoliaceae in the tropics.

Why are Magnoliaceae so diverse in the tropics? Disentangling the roles of diversification and time‐for‐speciation effects
The boreotropical relict Magnoliaceae, now rich in the tropics, experienced a major range contraction from high latitudes to the amphi-Pacific tropics following the mid-Eocene extinction. This histor...

Let’s take a look at leaf & flower timing. Synanthy (adj.: synanthous) is when flowers and leaves occur together at the same time. There are lots of good examples of this, as it’s very common. Here’s an example: Magnolia virginiana. #Magnoliaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Protoanthy (protoanthous/proteranthous) is when flowers appear before the leaves. Another Magnolia example: Many of the deciduous magnolias are protoanthous, like this hybrid Magnolia ‘Butterflies’. #Magnoliaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

While Magnolia relies on biotic seed dispersal, Liriodendron relies on the wind. Each carpel becomes a woody, winged fruit (except for the lowermost carpels, which form a basket to hold their winged sisters). This is L. tulipifera. #dispersal #Magnoliaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

The Asa Gray Disjunction is the biogeographical relationship between Eastern North America & the Sino-Japanese Floristic Region of East Asia. Classic example: Liriodendron (#Magnoliaceae) has just 2 spp: 📷1: L. tulipifera of ENA & 📷2: L. chinense Jiao Sun CCBY4 of EA. #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Tulpenmagnolie (Magnolia x soulangeana) 🤩 die Blüten sind übrigens essbar - wusstet ihr das? schmecken floral und leicht scharf, bisschen wie sehr milder Ingwer 😋

Pollination in Magnolia is often by beetles, but other insects may contribute. Magnolia ovata is a night-blooming, thermogenic & beetle-pollinated species. The 1st night, the stigmas are receptive. Flowers close in the day & open the 2nd night in the staminate phase. #Magnoliaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Magnolia grandiflora fruits are aggregates of follicles (that nobody calls a “follicetum”). The follicles open to reveal brightly colored seeds. The fleshy seed coat (that everyone calls a “sarcotesta”) is attractive to seed dispersers (birds & perhaps mammals). #Magnoliaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Not all magnolias smell great: M. tripetala has a vile odor. The most plentiful compounds in its fragrance profile are benzyl alcohol & acetophenone, both of which have a pleasant odor, but there’s something among its minor aromachemicals that stinks! #Magnoliaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

To ensure the beetle cross-pollinates it, the magnolia has a trick.

They attract pollen-coated beetles from nearby trees with sweet scents, then close inner tepals in the evening, trapping it next to female parts.

In the morning, the female parts close & the beetle is released...

Magnolia sieboldii has red, pendulous fruits, as shown in this cultivated plant. Does the fruit, rather than the seeds, attract the dispersers? Do the follicles open at maturity? Do the seeds have a contrasting color? I have so many questions. 🤷‍♂️ #dispersal #Magnoliaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
September 25, 2025 at 11:06 AM
Many plants reward animal seed-dispersers with fleshy fruits, but some have a fleshy seed coat, the sarcotesta, that does the same thing: entice & reward dispersers. A familiar example is Magnolia virginiana with bright red, fleshy seeds. #Magnoliaceae #dispersal #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

A warm and drizzly Thursday at #SpringGroveCemetery - swans, ducks, and herons hiding, I guess - lichen on a magnolia tree plus various ages of blooms on the same tree - Magnoliaceae is part of one of the earliest flowering & seed producing plant families - beetles were its pollinators! 🌿
