When we work together,
each taking turns in leading,
tackling the currents,
and forces unseen.
We achieve much more
than going it alone,
paddling in circles,
getting nowhere fast.

A flock of magpie geese just taking off from shallow waters in a lagoon. Most birds are only a few body-lengths in the air, wings beating hard to get airborne, and a few birds remain standing in the lagoon shallows.

#birdoftheday theme chosen by @alan678.bsky.social is #grounded, any bird on natural ground. Alt theme is #silhouettes&shadows

Only one I can find to fit the brief is our #MagpieGeese.

Magnificent birds. This one was very patient until I had my photo.

Three Magpie Geese looking to the right. The one at the back is in water, the other two are standing on green grass contemplating a little dip. The water is a muddy, green colour. The Magpie Goose has a black neck and head, with a characteristic knob on the crown (larger in males), which increases in size with age. The underparts are white, with contrasting black edges on the underwing. The legs and feet are orange-the bill is pink. The Magpie Goose differs from most waterfowl in having strongly clawed toes that are webbed only on their basal halves (i.e. only partly webbed). Females are slightly smaller than males. The Magpie Goose is widespread throughout coastal northern and eastern Australia and inhabits floodplains and wet grasslands.
