known for (governments not unlike Carthage, La Serenissima, or some of the Mahajanapadas), others have stuck closely to the Djuvahanian model (the Djuvahanians having inspired many of the region's anti-colonial rebels, not to mention played no small part in funding, arming, and advising said rebels)

Truschke is very right to dismiss the mahajanapadas (frequently cited by other sources as "republics") as questionable on historical accuracy.

I cringe whenever I see "Hindu Kush" in texts about pre-17c India. The first recorded appearance of Hindu Kush is in Ibn Batuta (14c)
