The rising of Makaliʻi (the constellation Pleiades) at sunset marks the beginning of the Hawaiian new year, known as Makahiki. Makahiki usally begins mid-November and ends in late January or February, aligning with the rainy season. It is a time set aside for tribute, harvest, sport, and play. 🙌🏾

Lunar New Year celebrations welcome a new beginning guided by the moon & the return of light.
In Hawaiʻi, this period also signals the close of the Makahiki season, as the time of Lono gives way to the season of Kū.

omg capitalism is soooooo great!
In Ancient Hawaiʻi, everyone was forbidden from working for four months in a row (Makahiki). They were required to instead rest, play sports, dance, eat, and socialize.
80%+ of Hawaiians were murdered via infectious disease spread by colonizers.

Lā Paʻani games!
To close the #Makahiki Season, our partner Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site invited 4th graders from South Kona schools to challenge each other in traditional makahiki games.
The event was held on the Royal Grounds 🌴 & HPPA (that’s us!) provided bus transport 🚌 & lunches 🍱!

Before there was “Mele Kalikimaka” or Christmas in Hawaii, there was “Makahiki,” the traditional winter season (mid-Nov to Feb) celebrations honoring Lono, god of fertility, agriculture, and peace, marked by feasting, harvest, sports, games, hula, and storytelling. #WetTribe #TidetotheOcean
