Also (nerdy details here) I’m really pleased with how my impression control is coming on. There’s almost no ‘punch’ to these prints at all, and that’s despite not having done specific makeready on account of just printing proofs today.

A typical paperback offset unit cost is $2-5.
Whereas POD technology can print ONE copy of a book without the same makeready costs.

Also, little secret: A lot of the offset presses also use POD technology these days, particularly for shorter print runs. They don't love the makeready time, either. It slows efficiency. And if they can offer publishers shorter runs, they don't lose business to the POD presses.

Printers hate this shit too bc it’s endless makeready costs at every low-quantity reprinting. The old days of a 20-30k+ first printing at a big pub is rare now.
