The animator of the scene shared this story (alt text from the 1st picture continued in the 2nd) only added to how much I enjoyed that scene.
malconpierce Artists are tasked with allowing an emotion or truth to be carried on through their artwork. Music, film, dance, sculpture, etc, all have the ability to connect with someone on a meaningful level. I believe, when the artists do their job effectively, that essence carries on into the viewer or listener. An example of this is when we move to music without thinking about it, when the hair on our neck stands up when a singer belts out the final note of a song, or simply laughing at a funny part of a movie. Moana was an incredible project to be a part of and it was during this production that my life changed forever. At the start of working on the film, My wife and I lost our son Cooper on his birthday, and at the end of the film, we found out we were pregnant with our second child, Casper. Some of my lowest and highest moments of my life were experienced during the production of this film. Animating at my desk late at night listening to this song allowed for a lot of reflection, bringing both pain and happiness. I did my best to channel these feelings into the animation of Moana. The goal was to find something true emotionally that I could put into my animation in hopes that it would make it to the person on the other side of the screen. "I will cross the horizon to find you", "I know your name", " they have stolen the heart from inside you", "but this does not define you". I thought about these words constantly while animating. For me, these shots represent how something as relentless as as grief doesn't have to hold you down. You have to travel THROUGH IT to get to the other-side, and that's where YOU WILL FIND STRENGTH. I felt as if I was standing on that rock, facing loss. I could run as long as I wanted but I knew it would never stop chasing me so I'd better face it. What I found was peace. I animated these shots straight ahead, one after the next. I wasn't trying to have the viewer share my same experiences, but I hoped that a truth from these real moments made it into the performance. Cooper's birthday is April 20th, would be 4 this year. Cooper is still inspiring me to dig deeper within myself and not take anything for granted. Happy birthday Cooper
