Originally employed purely as a diversion, he has become valuable to them for his ability to pull off the apparently impossible using stagecraft (the elevator pitch for the Malengine novel - there is a Malengine novel - is "Victorian 'Mission: Impossible'").

This is Richard Malengine, a former actor upon the late Victorian stage specialising in villainous roles who, by a series of unexpected events, becomes a master criminal (where meanings of "master" include "slightly crap").

It's the twoth of Decembermas, and you must all be punished for that thing you did, so here's the next bit of "Malengine's Advent Adventure."

The plot thickens, just when you thought it was pretty thick already.

No. Wait. That came out wrong.

I have a series character, Richard Malengine, a once lionised actor of villainous roles in the 1880s who fell upon hard times and ended up becoming a very unwilling agent of the Black Council, a murky group that operates organised crime all across Britain and its empire.

By the way and apropos to nothing but my writing career and other such trifles, I'm currently without lit. agent representation. Should any perspicacious agency wish to pick me (and this novel) up, drop me a line. I've a tonne of material here and want to crack on.

Back to Malengine.

Prepare to gasp, for suddenly a wild PLOT TWIST appears!

Well, all good things must come to an end. Unconnectedly, so must this.
I hope you've enjoyed suffering the psychic injury this has inflicted as much as I've enjoyed meting it out, although if you haven't, may I just say that I don't care.

This meant writing a Christmas story in 24 small chunks, each ending on a cliff-hanger of greater or smaller proportions. Christmas means Dickens and I thought Malengine would be the ideal character to run roughshod over a sort-of parody of A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Here, then, presented over 24 days is...

This will continue until you learn your lesson, or it's the 24th of the month, whichever comes first.

It's Christmas Eve, and the only subject on everyone's lips is "It's the last episode of MALENGINE'S ADVENT ADVENTURE tonight!" You lucky people. Let me just take the opportunity to wish you all the season's greetings, and if Christmas is a thing that you do, I hope that you have a merry one.

No escape for you, nyahahahah ect ect ect. Day 3 of the interminable #AdventAdventure.
December 3, 2025 at 11:23 AM
Oh, dear. You've all plainly been so extraordinarily bad this year that Father Christmas has put you on the "Special Measures" sub-paragraph of the Naughty List, AKA more of this story.
December 19, 2024 at 4:21 PM
And so the curtain comes down on the play within the play. A cold Christmas morning, laden with cold Christmas realities, awaits our heroes ("heroes" being a highly subjective term).

13! Unlucky for some! You lot, for example.

One of these days I'll finally place this novel. It's not bad, I think. #RichardMalengine

It's the 17th! Everyone's favourite prime number!

Yes, it is.

It is Book Quotation Wednesday, and the word is "air." Here, have a wee chunk from ye unpublished Richard Malengine novel. Messrs Malengine and Harris (the housetrained thug who acts as Malengine's manservant) are entering into a den of deep iniquity beneath the streets of London.

And so we arrive at the two thirds mark and the home straight beckons. Can you feel the excitement? No, that's not excitement. You're going to need some antacid for that.

Look! You're 20.83333333333333% of the way already! You can do this! I believe in you!
