#NationalOpossumDay:
#Opossum in the “paradise garden”mural cycle of Malinalco, Mexico, c. 1535/1585. The cycle is a rare survivng example of early colonial art with Indigenous artists in Spanish churches mixing native & European styles and filling Christian scenes with native fauna & flora.

Big 'Queen of Malinalco' tomatillo. I can feel a fruit developing inside, but it hasn't filled the husk yet. #Garden2025

So the tomatillo I am growing this year are the standard toma verde but I also am planting in a bunch called Chupon de Malinalco which is an heirloom verity from Malinalco, Mexico.

I am -very- excited to taste these as they are apparently sweet like a husk cherry and make good salsas. 🌱

Malinalco, near Mexico City, showcases the ruins of a temple named Cuauhcalli, or “House of the Eagles,” built directly into the hillside. It's the only example of such rock-cut architecture in the Aztec world.

Malinalxochitl, loosely based on descriptions (she has no known actual depictions) and codices. Sorceress sister of Huitzilopochtli, who founded Malinalco.

First heirloom tomatillo harvest! We grew one last year but it didn’t set fruit. So we learned an odd fact about tomatillos that somehow eluded us thru years of vegetable farming- unlike most veggies, a single tomatillo plant cannot pollinate itself. So this year in the garden we grew 2! #gardening

#Garden2025 update: All tomato varieties now have fruits: Sungold, Black Krim, Black Pear, and Berkeley Tie Dye. One Black Pear has flowers but no tomatoes yet. Lots of little fruits on the Purple tomatillo; flowers only so far on Queen of Malinalco. I'm reading this variety is slow to set fruit.

So, here is the physalis ixocarpa flower (Tomatillo Queen of Malinalco) that inspired me, and the first sunflower I got from my experiments! 😁
This sunflower eventually grew up to (about) my size. 🌻

What is today's #Garden2025 harvest? The people clamor to know! Behold: The first 'Black Krim' tomato! The first 'Raider' cucumbers! More 'Sungold' tomatoes because the two plants are like tomato fountains! And another big 'Queen of Malinalco' tomatillo! Horticultural gloating will now commence. :)

House of the Eagles (Cuauhcalli) is a monolithic temple in Malinalco, EdoMex, carved in a rock during the reign of the Mexica emperor Ahuizotl, it served as a sacred site for elite Eagle and Jaguar warriors. It features a serpent-mouthed entrance symbolizing the Earth Monster Tlaltecuhtli, ~1500CE.

La señora dijo que me va a traer una corona de cristo desde Malinalco porque se le hizo cara en el mercado.
Yo sólo quiero que se me de para que vengan más colibríes.

The calyces or husks of round 'Purple' tomatillo and elongated yellow 'Queen of Malinalco' suggest the shapes of the fruit that will eventually fill them. #Garden2025
