I don't understand how mandolinists fit their fingers between those tiny frets. And you gotta push down those double strings so hard!

When I'm playing a tune that goes back a century or two, I think of all the fiddlers and flautists and mandolinists who played those same notes before me, all of us linked by tradition, and I like to imagine maybe one of them played it even more clumsily than I am.

Wow! Thanks for that. A couple years ago, an instructor told a bunch of us geezer mandolinists that we should not practice so as to sound like Chris Thile. “To do that, you would have to have started when you were 5 years old!”

(And be massively talented)

really exquisite writing. like many (maybe most) mandolinists, Thile is a huge inspiration to me. I've spent enough time admiring his music and stagecraft to know that he's smart enough to speak full throatedly about his beliefs—but he really does love to defang himself. also my problem with Dylan.
