Sonic Mania is so good at this that it introduced the Drop Dash, a cut mechanic from Sonic 3 that hadn't been discovered yet and the devs didn't even know about
I love watching a cybershell video and hearing about some incredibly minute odd detail about the early Sonic games and then a minute later he mentions that Sonic Mania referenced it absolutely every single time. That's how you know that game was made by freaks
