Related: I did the whole US history PhD shebang and still only recently learned about St. Malo and the "Manilamen."
Saint Malo: The first Asian settlement in the US
Before the US was a country, Filipinos were likely living in raised, stilted homes over the swamplands outside New Orleans.

October is Filipino American History Month.
In "A Bigfoot Homecoming," Nathaniel Francisco Abayon Villanueva is descended from Louisiana's Manilamen who jumped ship from Spanish galleons in the 18th century. His character is inspired by Filipino friends.

It's funny that you say that Filipinos didn't come to Australia "escape war"; as a matter of fact there are some who did. The first wave of Filipinos who came to Australia were Filipino men who came to work in the pearling industry in northern Australia in the 1860s. They are known as "Manilamen" /1

These "Manilamen" fished and shrimped, saw the transition from Mexico to the US, and survived as a community into the 20th century when a hurricane(s) destroyed Saint Malo.
