I learned in John Keene's "Counternarratives" that the first non-Native inhabitant of Manhattan (Mannahatta) was Jan Rodrigues, a "mulatto born in Santo Domingo" who arrived on the Dutch ship Jonge Tobias where he worked as a translator and a trader.

He decided to stay.

I guess it’s our karma for swindling Mannahatta from Native Americans for a few beads and muskets. Now we’re selling the entire country off for swag bags of overpriced luxury-labeled trash made for pennies in a Chinese factory.

The land that the White House is on was Nacotchtank land before Europeans arrived. Let's rename DC "Nacotchtank". Change the signs.
I'd happily rename where I live Mannahatta (Lenape). We're three fourths there with the current name anyway.
Siempre Golfo de Mexicó.

Science has revealed vast changes over centuries, as in Eric Sanderson's fantastic 1609 - 2009 Mannahatta Project @thewcs.bsky.social & welikia.org But it's vital to carry things FORWARD. What will 2409 look like? The rest of my talk: revkin.substack.com/p/what-ive-l...

A rare photo of the skeletons of the long extinct mammoth pigeons that used to rule the hills of prehistoric Mannahatta.

Looking north with Times Square in the distance.

Have you read MANNAHATTA? It's an environmental study, an attempt to reconstruct Manhattan before European settlement. There's lots in there about streams and ponds, original shorelines and removed hills.

yep, I know. “Tappanzee” means “Sea of the Tappan” in Dutch, the Tappan were one of the original tribes of Mannahatta.
