Today's doctors still do it. Had medical grade manuka honey applied on a hematoma wound on my leg from a crush incident. Debriding and manuka for about 2 months and no dent in my leg. Amazing stuff. Antibacterial qualities.

had extremely bad eczema before, i swear by manuka honey (min grade umf 10+). get some from trader joes or costco or online. apply and wait about 15-20min+ before washing off. do this once daily. it may hurt or burn at first, but it will be better after as it restores the skin.
