Krishna, Akshay Yesodharan, and Lalit Talluri performing at Spaces in Chennai Can Carnatic music evolve while preserving its essence? ‘Spirits of Margazhi’ answered with a resounding ‘yes’ at its first live concert at Spaces in Besant Nagar recently. Founded by Priya Murali, the ensemble bridges the old and the new, inviting listeners into a world where tradition is not rigid but fluid. The concert chose to move in the unhurried grace of chouka kalam, letting every note unfurl in fullness. Tyagaraja’s timeless compositions found kinship with the dohas of Kabir, the bhakti-laden verses of Tulsidas, the comforting rhythm of Arunagirinathar’s Tirupuggazh and the compositions of Muralidhara Swamigal.

Athriya Krishna Balaji impressed with her realistic portrayals. | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement Athriya Krishnan Balaji, disciple of Vinitha Subramanian, presented her solo recital, incorporating tales from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, at the Margazhi music and Dance Margazhi Festival organised under the auspices of Kartik Fine Arts. Athriya began her recital with a pushpanjali in raga Srotaswini, set to Adi tala, a composition by Madurai R. Muralidaran. The next item was the varnam, for which Athriya chose episodes from the Mahabharata, especially those that led to the Kurukshetra War.

While tuning into the music, they also had to keep in mind copyright law as the sabhas (performance venues) forbade them from unauthorised recording. Copyright law has seldom been at the forefront of discussion in the Carnatic music sphere as there is a general belief that copyright law does not apply to it. We need to revisit this view.
