Still Life with Lemon and Cut Glass, 1823-1826, by #MariaMargarethaVanOs (Dutch, 1779-1862). Held by the Rijksmuseum, www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/collectio... #womenartists #artherstory #NationalLemonDay
According to the Virtual Museum website, “At the center, a partially peeled lemon reveals its juicy flesh, creating a luminous contrast against the dark background. Its spiral of peel, rendered with almost tactile precision, dialogues with the sparkling facets of the cut glass on the left. This goblet, a true technical feat, subtly captures and refracts light, testifying to the artist’s virtuosity in rendering materials. The delicate blue flowers and the lightly posed butterfly bring life and movement to this meticulously orchestrated scene. The reddish-orange tablecloth, a warm foundation for this composition, anchors the ensemble in an atmosphere both intimate and solemn, characteristic of the refinement of Dutch still life painting.”

At the back right of this painting is an elaborate white pedestal vase, containing violets. At top left are some bluebells, beneath which is a white butterfly perching on fuchsia in the painting's bottom left. Next to the fuchsia, sitting on a wood or stone ledge, is a bunch of green grapes, next to which are a half orange (showing cross section and a whole orange (just in front of which is a knife handle), then a bunch of red grapes.
