Ja, ist leider so. Die ökonomische Situation ist heute sogar schlimmer als zur Zeit der Apartheid. Das blutige Niederschießen der Streikenden in Marikana vor mehr als zehn Jahren war ein trauriges Beispiel dafür.

On the bsky.app/profile/gsph... educational trip, the delegation visited Marikana in South Africa's platinum belt to see where critical minerals come from and hear from communities who live in mining areas. Supply chains cannot be sustainable without grassroots inputs.

I was like that's definitely a ore stock pile in the back of the photo before releasing this is actually from South Africa, Marikana. Mines here gets away with a lot.
#OtD 5 Oct 2012 12,000 striking workers were fired by Anglo American Platinum in South Africa. The company justified this by citing the failure of workers to attend disciplinary hearings and the loss of 700 million rand ($82.3 million) in revenue stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/1261...

Not much written about the history of platinum mining unfortunately, especially before 2011 (lots written about Marikana and the other strikes). There's a bit on property and mining rights:

Poetry that seems new at the time of selection starts to date immediately; poems about memorable events – the Marikana massacre in 2012 or the death of Mandela – may be too feeble to carry their own symbolic weight. Some poets might even be writing to order, aiming for canonisation.

Office this morning. Actually not very far from where the Marikana koppies are where the miners where massacred.

Office for the morning. Somewhere near Marikana.

Agreed. Our previous offices (up until 1 Sept) were at Melrose Arch in the next building over from Lonmin. The number of times that the precinct was locked down because of marches in the streets definitely points to a company that didn't improve worker relations after Marikana. Management far away.

Hate doing background noise at Marikana. The way the mines are not managing the area and way the roads are crisscrossing makes google maps impossible too use. It straight up could not identify the main route to the mime this morning.

🔴 Since 1994, South Africa has built more than three million subsidised homes. Marikana is still an informal settlement, and at least two million households remain on the waiting list. The cheaper answer: service the land and leave residents to build. “Temporary” was the lie for…

*Ahem*: it’s Afrikaner. Afrikaans is the language. And Marikana was 18 years after end of apartheid, under an ANC government. But yes; IZrael involved for decades in apartheid SA. Right down to joint testing of a nuke in the Southern Ocean, if you believe some folk.
