#MarineBioASU
Was hoping to be able to livestream live from a shark research vessel for my #MarineBioASU students, but I’m grounded due to COVID and am having them watch this live-at-the-time video from last year

I was hoping to actually be in the field and broadcast live to my #MarineBioASU students, but pandemic, so instead they’re watching an old livestream you can watch too

My #MarineBioASU students are viewing this live (at the time) stream from a @Field_School shark research cruise I participated in. Check it out: @ASU @asuonline @ASUNewCollege @ASUinDC

My #MarineBioASU students are watching this old livestream of me doing shark research this week, and you can too https://x.com/whysharksmatter/status/1161745051661287425?s=12

I am not forcing my personal values on my marine biology students, but our biodiversity unit does include a brief discussion on why the sandbar shark is scientifically proven to be the #BestShark and why the haters are wrong. #MarineBioASU

Want more ocean in your twitter feed? I made this list of ~100 awesome ocean science communication folks/institutions for my #MarineBioASU course but y'all can use it too if you want https://x.com/i/lists/1179471664138076172

Watch out, world, today my #MarineBioASU students start their twitter assignment to follow and learn from real-life marine biologists who tweet about their research! They may ask y'all questions (they aren't required to, that would flood your menshies).

This is the first week of my introduction to marine biology course at @asu @ASUNewCollege #MarineBioASU ! This week, my students are learning what marine biology is as a field, and some challenges associated with studying life in the ocean. [Gif: Daily Show on Boaty McBoatFace]

This week my #MarineBioASU students are learning about some of the tools in a marine biologist’s toolbox. How can we study organisms that live in an environment hostile to human life? It’s hard!

What marine biology research tools do you know of? (Anyone, not just my students)

My #MarineBioASU students are filling the class's online discussion forum with their favorite ocean critters and personal stories of why they like sea turtles and octopuses and stuff and reading it is giving me joy.
December 4, 2024 at 9:32 PM
This week and next week in my #MarineBioASU course, students are learning about marine and coastal ecosystems and what unique challenges each type of habitat poses for organisms.

What’s your favorite marine or coastal ecosystem, and why?
December 4, 2024 at 4:55 PM
So my #MarineBioASU students are following ocean twitter as part of an assignment, and are asked to report one neat thing they learned each week. (It's passive observation they don't need to spam y'all)

Things they love so far include:

This week, my #MarineBioASU students finished our tour of coastal and marine ecosystems, and were asked what their favorite ecosystem they hadn't heard of before was.

Even split between mangroves, oyster reefs, and the deep sea.

Goddammit... another week has passed in which @SolomonRDavid getting excited about gars is one of my #MarineBioASU students' favorite things they saw on twitter.

Nobody tell Solomon about this. 😂
December 4, 2024 at 3:20 PM
This week, my #MarineBioASU students start their survey of ocean biodiversity with marine invertebrates. What’s your favorite marine invertebrate, and why? Bonus points for science-based trash talk of other ocean invertebrates (but be nice to other people).
December 4, 2024 at 3:20 PM
A request, if you’re able to do this *safely* while grocery shopping this week: can you snap some photos of seafood products clearly showing the labels at your store? Frozen or at seafood counter? It’s for my #MarineBioASU class. Send to me with store name and city.
December 4, 2024 at 3:15 PM
This week, my #MarineBioASU students learned all about marine invertebrates, and were asked to pick their favorite group.

Currently jellyfish are in the lead. No one tell @RebeccaRHelm this, please.

My #MarineBioASU students learned about taxonomy and the etymology of scientific names, and several reported *LOVING* the Vibranium Wrasse (C. wakanda), which I wrote about here:

Checked my draft tweets and apparently I never actually shared the original artwork made by an @ASU workstudy student to promote my #MarineBioASU course. I love it!

(The SCUBA diver is *NOT* touching the whale, they're in front of the whale, LOLz)
December 4, 2024 at 1:56 PM
This week one of my #MarineBioASU students’ assignments is to pick a favorite shark and trash talk their classmates’ favorite sharks (attacking the sharks, not each other) and the responses so far are cracking me up
December 4, 2024 at 1:56 PM
I thought I was doing a good job teaching my #MarineBioASU students, but every week lots of them say that their favorite tweet from their "follow scientists on twitter to learn stuff that's not in the book" assignment was from @SolomonRDavid , so I must be doing something wrong.
December 4, 2024 at 1:30 PM
Also, my #MarineBioASU students, who are following scientists on twitter as part of a "learn neat stuff that isn't in the textbook" assignment, are loving the "feud" between @CoralReefFish @gobysimon and @FishGuyKai about "nasty gobies" and such.
December 4, 2024 at 1:30 PM
Thanks to my twitter followers who (safely) snapped photos of seafood during your grocery store runs. My #MarineBioASU students are using them this week for a sustainable seafood detective exercise. They were gonna be sent to a store near them, but that's not currently safe.
December 4, 2024 at 1:09 PM
So ocean science twitter, my #MarineBioASU class and I wanted to thank you for filling our feeds with so much awesome information this semester! You taught us a lot and made learning fun!
December 4, 2024 at 1:03 PM
And with that, this semester of #MarineBioASU is over.

My students were a delight to teach, and they did a great job in the class and on this week's final under very chaotic life circumstances.

Fair winds and a following sea to you all.
