#Marketisation
Fascinating to read a piece demanding further marketisation to solve the escalating crisis caused by previous rounds of marketisation which never quite grasps how the strategic function of specific institutions can force governments into panicked nationalisation rather than Schumpeterian destruction

Gee I wonder which party initiated the marketisation of unis that led us here?

It all inevitably goes back to the marketisation of higher education
I think this is such a major driver of AI use in university assessments. And also just a real… disconnection between why we think students are here (to learn about history!) and why students think they are here (to get good grades, to get a job)
When you're working 3 jobs while going to school full time and just barely making enough to feed yourself, ChatGPT offers an appealing way to make life a little bit easier without feeling like you're REALLY doing something wrong

I'm increasingly getting a double bell curve in my classes

One of the greatest arguments against the marketisation of art can be found in the return of Friday Nights. Designed not to perform in line with algorithmic trends, but just to *be* a great series, & each new instalment is better than the last as a result.

Academic publishing was bad long before the platformised web. This is a consequence of marketisation not enshittification.

Last 5 years saw this longterm marketisation of higher education put onto steroids ofc.

Like literally everything else, the Tories utterly vandalised our prized university sector, & relied on migrants both to save their skins & take the blame.

They have had nothing like the reckoning they deserve.

The inevitable - and vile - consequence of the marketisation of education.
This is causing despair in academe. (1) We were forced to close during Covid. We had no choice! (2) We're not service providers like a restaurant, we are institutions of state. (3) We did everything we could. (4) This will cripple current students' education.

This is good. Very light on the research side of the equation but more than sane and informed on the teaching side, including failure of marketisation and a recognition that ‘cheap’ subjects subsidise expensive one. Well worth reading.

basically i'm of the belief that while not all marketisation was necessary, and not all marketisation was democratisation, the system /was/ unnatural and sort of had to be destroyed from the ground up
