A fly over by 12 Spoonbills while waiting for the Pallid Harrier yesterday took me back to my first visit to Minsmere back in the 90s where I saw my first in flight.

A brilliant day of raptor watching at Marshside today, and the highlight was the juvenile Pallid Harrier that (after a 5 hour wait) flew in close enough for a rubbish photo. #ukbirding #birds #BirdsSeenIn2026 for England

Yep all three egrets here on NW England coast at times and spoonbills been here for a few years but not great numbers

The marshland at RSPB Marshside just a couple of miles away unsurprisingly isn't very marshy. We need that rain please or nature will do it's usual and adapt, which is fine

Went to the local RSPB area at Marshside early today during the golden hour - it was cold!

Not much playing ball today for the camera

In the far distance I saw two large wings flapping slowly and thought, oohhh our local marsh harrier but then it pulled up to land in that unmistakable Heron way!

Heard a European Robin singing its autumn song in the garden early this morning. Year is on the turn despite the latest heat wave.

Also mackerel sky at Marshside. Hope it does mean rain is on the way.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BestOfJuly, so I've decided to interpret that as best sightings rather than best photos.

Two spoonbills from too far away and a badly framed osprey carrying a fish, from much too far away.

Very pleased just to see them, to be honest.

This one from #Marshside in #Kent. Think the cypher is Edward VII - but hard to tell given weathering and repaints. So probably 116 years (ish) old.

Juvenile spoonbill.

Young birds differ from adults in that they have all-white feathers with black wing tips and the bill is grey, becoming black with a yellow tip in adulthood. These birds have bred at RSPB Marshside, Southport, UK.
