Poem text: "The Road to Marykirk", by Violet Jacob The Road to Marykirk Violet Jacob To Marykirk ye’ll set ye forth. An’ whustle as ye step alang, An’ aye the Grampians i’ the North Are glow’rin’ on ye as ye gang. By Martin’s Den, through beech an’ birk, A breith comes soughin’, sweet an’ strang, Alang the road to Marykirk. Frae mony a field ye’ll hear the cry O’ teuchits, skirlin’ on the wing, Noo East, noo West, amang the kye, And smell o’ whins the wind ’ll bring; Aye, lad, it blaws a thocht to mock The licht o’ day on ilka thing— For you, that went yon road last spring, Are lying deid in Flanders, Jock.

Final in the Aberdeenshire trio, Means had a Conservative first preference lead but an SNP win by three (3!) votes for a single seat winner calculation. I don't see how that stands up in a by-election, but transfer rate drop-off could go either way.

Call: Lean Conservative

In percentage terms, Conservative 31.8, SNP 29.0, Independent Evison 10.8, Independent Stewart 8.9, LIb Dem 6.5, Labour 5.8, Green 3.4, Alba 1.7, Independent Neill 1.3, Family 0.9 Transfers for the ward in 2022, re-calculated for a single winner. These two by Violet Jacob might be of use, although they are quite different from each other: “Come On, Come Up, Ye Rovers”, and “The Road to Marykirk”
Violet Jacob 'COME ON, COME UP, YE ROVERS' Come on, come up, ye rovers Whose ships at anchor ride, The west wind stirs the clovers, And O! the world is wide: So, up with your chains as the sun goes down And out upon the tide! There drives on the Atlantic The torn scud of the rain, And lines of foam leap frantic Against the coast of Spain, Where the air is full of the souls of men Who sailed the Spanish Main. Where Rocca's light is burning On plunging miles of sea, Eastward and eastward turning, By Crete and Tripoli, There is a spirit abroad in the wind That cries aloud to me. The coast drops low behind you, The gull swoops round the spars; Shall small men's limits bind you Whose milestones are the stars? Whose signposts stand where Orion swings Above earth's locks and bars? Come up, ye sons of morning, This world was built for you! Far off, Heaven's light's adorning The lands where dreams come true; And the Angel that sits at the Gates of the East Shall open and let you through. Violet Jacob THE ROAD TO MARYKIRK To Marykirk ye'll set ye forth, An' whustle as ye step alang, An' aye the Grampians i' the North Are glow'rin' on ye as ye gang. By Martin's Den, through beech an' birk, A breith comes soughin', sweet an' strang, Alang the road to Marykirk. According to Wind Engineering (vol.29, issue 3, fact fans), he “offered surplus electricity to the people of Marykirk for lighting the main street. However the villagers turned down the offer, as they thought electricity to be the work of the devil”
Letters: Devil's wind
The first person to harness the wind to produce electricity was a Scotsman, James Blyth ('America reaps the wind harvest', 21 August). He first consulted his colleague, Lord Kelvin, about the possibil...

What a night - thankfully our power is still on. Our daughter who lives more rurally has lost hers as have many, many others. The coast road is closed at Northwater Bridge and the road to the A90 is closed at Marykirk. The residents of Brechin have been hit the hardest.
