To reiterate the most important part of my long-ass caption, a core tenet of #MaskWeek2026 is trying to get folks who have stopped masking to start doing it again at "The Big 3" (stores, mandatory appointments, public transit). Text of my Insta post that reads: #WorldMaskWeek is almost over, but I spent this whole week promoting @slay_thebeast's virtual concert (which went SO well yesterday - thank you to everyone who came! 🙏), so this is the first chance I've had to post! Remaining #covidconscious and masking to protect myself and others has become a huge part of my life these past 6+ years; so much so that the vast majority of what I now do socially, creatively, etc. is with fellow maskers 😷 I don't expect to change anybody's mind about the importance of masking, but I *have* inserted factoid slides in between pictures of me having fun while masked because hope springs eternal! ✨️ One of the core tenets of #MaskWeek2026 is trying to get folks who have stopped masking to start doing it again at "The Big 3" (stores, mandatory appointments, and public transit), because these are places that even the most vulnerable among us cannot avoid. So I hope that my friends reading this will at least consider masking up again in those specific circumstances! It's a small ask that can greatly benefit not only medically vulnerable people, but our communities in general 💗 Knowing what I now know about chronic illness/disability justice, I anticipate continuing to mask at places like these even if we do eventually get sterilizing vaccines and/or Covid ever "goes away" (lololollllll). Please consider protecting yourself and others, and thanks for reading! P.S. Even if you think wearing a mask in other spaces is too much work, too much to ask, or that disabled and virus-avoidant folks should just stay home, there are often no other people to run errands at these essential spaces. WHAT WE KNOW (AND DON'T) ABOUT COVID-19'S EFFECT ON THE IMMUNE SYSTEM LASTING IMPACT Growing research shows infection with SARS-CoV-2 can create lasting differences in some people's immune systems. THIS LOOKS LIKE... Altered immune system cells Severe cases of COVID-19 can change the parent stem that generate immune cells. These altered stem cells create cells that are more inflammatory. Viral reservoirs and fragments Proteins and fragments that have been found in people with Long COVID can set off a continuing memine respons and amplify inflammation Immune dysregulation and chronic inflammation Dysregulation = when some cells are working hard and others are exhausted. How long it can last is unknown. Triggered autoimmune conditions, blood clots, and latent viruses COVID-19 infections can trigger autoantibodies that lead to autoimmune disorders. 5-20% of people develop lingering symptoms or new health conditions after infection, called Long COVID.
