#Masocore
Ugh... is that what it is?

I'm starving for oldschool Symphony-style Castlevania power fantasy but seems like every metroidvania now wants to be near-masocore soulslike like Hollow Knight.

I mean, it looks pretty but I feel tired. Mina the Hollower also blindsided me with being overly hardcore.

Precisa demais chamar game designers pra essa reforma. Transformar num jogo mais justo pq no momento é masocore contra big techs

Oh okay, lol that makes sense then. Masocore is i think the term the cool kids use? Wasn't built to enjoy those type of things myself. They can be fun to watch if done creatively. I remember PC Gamer did one for Skyrim where the guy Roleplayed as an NPC/Normal person trying to survive in the world

apparent mountain goats live in like vertical hellscape zones nobody wants to live in specifically because they're vertical hellscape zones nobody wants to live in. so all the pumas and bears and things ar elike i don't want to play a masocore video game. goodbye. goat empire real

speaking of masocore Famicom games hey did more of Sunsoft's licenses go to IntiCreates? Bc hear me out, they should do the Blaster Master Zero treatment on Wing of Madoola

sorry insane logical construct where i was thinking about how in an arcade game with lives bosses are balanced to be fair at the end of the stage after you also played the stage vs masocore bosses with checkpoints before them, orig-series-mm vs the-reggae-operation distinction

Nioh 2 tried "masocore" and, even though it probably needs a bit of workshopping, it's a shame it didn't stick

are you into masocore platformers? how do you feel about isolation, and people who won't stop trying to make you into something you aren't? do you like villains who are scary and funny and pitiable all at the same time? play Love Eternal.

*gets up to podium for my narf address* So what did I do when I was 30...

I made a video game that wasn't in a fangame engine -> narfnra.itch.io/battle-narf

That's pretty cool.
I was hoping to make another one by now but life has been pretty tough.
So we'll shoot for at least one per year.

I think I'm mostly right here, but I'm also wondering if I'm being a nintendo brat. last night I was watching my wife play cybernoid on a zx spectrum emulator and I instantly got 00s freeware tingles... you have limited lives, it's not masocore, but there's a vibe consonance there
Masocore platformers in particular are largely a 21st century invention, and they're a kind of action design that doesn't make me go "I wish I was playing a normal arcade game instead" like most steam roguelites or metroidvanias. Better worlds are out there narfnra.itch.io/battle-narf

i suggested "friendcore" in the way people would say "masocore" about tough platformers and such

but i'm a psycho and i insist on "backtraction" instead of "metroidvania" so

It's like DOOM, it's a pc game tradition that takes advantage of form factor to make a new kind of action game experience that's as robust as in arcades.

(I will extend this grace to DOOM and masocore and not to fucking hades)

sometimes i feel like masocore is another attempt to create a hard game that isnt aimed merely at 1ccing, it's very interesting as part of the evolution of action from arcade to home console

Derelict Star really is your favorite platformer's favorite platformer. Squarely focused on momentum control and jump timing honed down to an art. It isn't masocore hard or mean but it *does* demand a degree of precision. The game uses the phrase "tricky" and I think that's apt.

I feel like this little two minute snippet encapsulates both the gameplay and tone pretty well so far. Spooky yet sad, story driven, not-quite-masocore-but-still-hard platforming building off of stuff like VVVVVV, Knytt, and a teensy wee bit of Celeste with the gems that direct your path.

but I've played masocore platformers before, and this one's controls are the butteriest I've felt since Super Meat Boy

4. Washout Spire by June Flower

vortex of queer despair in the shape of a hair-tearing luscious pixel art masocore platformer. maybe the hardest game i have ever finished, maybe the most meaningful experience of suffering in a game i've ever had. my 2022 goty

10 seconds dash! finished!

THE YURI IS REAL

Honestly what a lovely little game, wonderfully simple and well scoped. Big recommend if you're a casual fan of sicko masocore platformers and want something with a lot of soul. Its not the craziest but it doesn't need to be~
