Another Bialowieza throwback to spring. Very bad yr for Wood Warblers: low numbers, high predation. By contrast, Britain had 'good' yr. Seems linked to tree masting (eg. acorns). Theory suggests 2026 should be good in Bialowieza (no masting this autumn), but poor in Britain (as 2025 is a mast year).
Absolute carnage in the Białowieża Wood Warbler study this year. Nest failure rate currently running at over 83%!!!! Almost all due to predation: mostly foxes, jays and martens. Some also trampled, possibly Red Deer. Only a handful of nests have fledged any chicks. @martamaziarz.bsky.social

Heute vor 91 Jahren stürzte sich die Magdeburger Jüdin Sophie Masting in wohl düsterer Vorahnung auf das, was da kommen mag, vom Nordturm des Magdeburger Domes.
At their current sites, #kakapo only breed in response to rimu 'masting' (mass-fruiting), which only happens every 2-4 years. The ripe fruit is a 'super food', rich in calcium (and perhaps vitamin D) necessary to raise chicks with large, heavy bones. #conservation #parrots
