Spring’s been here. Pines pouring incense into mild moist air. Birds building. Two days heavy snow. Midwinter again.
Getting used to working in a beehive. Porous matchboard partitions. Smoking-room next door, French lessons in the morning, tea & bridge afternoon & evening.

Today is painting the laundry room, a Victorian coal shed attached to the house. We PVA primed the old brick w. lime mortar/filled holes, and now are painting with masonry paint. New window installed. Next weekend, tidying electrics and putting in matchboard ceiling. Then floor, new worktops.

I know the nave of St Thomas à Becket, Ramsey, is quite tall, but I do think they could have dusted the cobwebs...
The Nave of St Thomas à Becket, Ramsey, looking west from the north side of the chancel arch. It is an arcade of seven bays, with the westernmost bay slighted by the tower. The arcades are formed from two centred arches of two plain orders with chamfered labels. The arcade piers each have a moulded base and rebated plinth, and are paired. East to west: four grouped keeled shafts; eight grouped round shafts; round piers; square piers with four attached and keeled shafts; octagonal piers; eight grouped and keeled shafts. Each capital differs. North arcade from east to west: waterleaf with square rebated abacus; leaf with grooved round abacus; beaded scallop and leaf with square, rebated abacus; leaves with volutes and grooved, round abacus; scalloped with paired volutes and square, rebated abacus; leaves with volutes and grooved, round abacus. South arcade from east: leaves with volutes and square, rebated abacus; leaf ornament with grooved, round abacus; leaves with volutes and square, rebated abacus; waterleaf and round, grooved abacus; scalloped with square, rebated abacus; waterleaf with round, grooved abacus. A pair of blocked openings above the second pair of piers from the east mark the entrance to the former rood loft. The roof is a series of queen post trusses supported by arch braces springing from carved corbels. Ornamental bracing forming two centred arches sit between the queen posts and rafters and between the queen posts and ridge. Junction of two principal rafters at the apex of the nave ceiling. You can see where the ornamental bracing starts to separate from the actual rafters themselves, which are mostly concealed by matchboard ceiling. There is a MASSIVE spiderweb covered in dust here - it must be 750 mm to a meter wide at its widest point.

Also installed the wall mounted ironing board, and I bought the flooring. DH ordered the matchboard/wood for the ceiling, and I have the paint already. This is finally going to happen. No more room of doom. Best Xmas present ever.
