It only took 4 years and a surgery but I am starting to feel at home again in my own skin. Matrescence is wild.

On the latest Embodied episode, a science writer explains the science behind “matrescence,” which describes the ongoing changes that come with motherhood, and how this concept could help us better support parents.

Matrescence, the developmental transition into motherhood, is biologically measurable, psychologically profound, and professionally transformative.

When we fail to recognise matrescence, we reduce motherhood to pathology screening.

That's missed care.

My photo entitled 'Hope' (much needed rn.) From my doc project 'Fallow,' in which I compare myself/my matrescence finally after long-time #infertility struggle to a field left alone to regenerate and heal.

When I look back on my journey to embracing #gyaru, I’m reminded of how much my mindset changed after going through matrescence. ❤️‍🩹 I do what I want, and stopped worrying whether I’d be judged by others. Not only did I rediscover my identity, I elevated it! ❤️‍🔥

Hi, Blue Sky!

I’m Christina — a therapist, feminist, and advocate for moms. I talk about mental load, matrescence, and the realities of modern motherhood. Let’s connect and have real conversations about the stuff that doesn’t always get talked about.

Sometimes the perfect book is published at the perfect time in your life. For me, that book is Matrescence by Lucy Jones, which came out 2 months before Sylvia was born. When Jones recently hand printed a small batch of t-shirts, I was lucky enough to nab one. More book shirts!!

This is so hard for me to untangle on a personal level because I also went through matrescence during April/May 2020.
There's a whole future research area around how covid/lockdown destroyed folks ability to self regulate feelings and how we are seeing it daily with road rage, people screaming at service workers/teachers/hospital folks... covid impacts brain function in ways we do not fully understand yet.

Yes! I don’t know if you’ve read Matrescence by Lucy Jones but that has interesting bits on how expectations (and advice) on how much parents (and let’s be honest, mothers) should be doing for their children have changed
