Another day spent fruitlessly searching for the Black Library in Weychester Cathedral. Another dozen subterranean rooms visited, but no new clues. It remains firmly occulted. Remains legendary, an engine of the imagination. – #MattAdams

Sometimes the messages people chalk on gravestones are obscure. Sometimes the messages are chillingly direct. – #MattAdams, 1981

If you want any hope of finding the hidden Black Library of Weychester Cathedral, the first thing you must do is lose your tour guide. - #MattAdams

Maisie says it's wrong to have favourite graves as it makes others in the boneyard jealous. However, I just can't help myself at times. – #MattAdams, 1982 #SkullFriday

I have just discovered the Hookland dialect word 'perimarg' – the unshakeable sense of something unseen waiting ahead at the mouth of a path or lane. – #MattAdams, Hookland #WOTD

I've just learnt a new word of Hookland dialect – crawfarlow. It means the holding of a reasonable fear based upon the knowledge of things under the water's surface. – #MattAdams, 1981 #Hookland #WOTD

Some gates make you wary of climbing over or opening them. You have this weird sense that crossing their threshold will deliver you somewhere else. Faery or some parallel dimension that is simultaneously familiar yet alien. My danger radar is weak, but not that weak. – #MattAdams

I learnt a new word of Hookland dialect today – wodwak. It's used to describe the sensation that a wood or even a specific tree is watching you. That moment when your psychic skin won't let you deny that bark-browed eyes are upon you. – #MattAdams

There is a Hookland dialect word – woldclip –which means to be summoned by the woods, to ache so much for wildness that you almost need to run towards its entanglement. I've been told that this portion of spring is known as a 'woldclip week'. – #MattAdams, 1982

One piece of folklore I refuse to believe in is the waking of England's stone and wooden nights when the country is in peril. We keep lurching right, we keep lurching toward authoritarianism and they don't even show any signs of twitching. – #MattAdams, 1982

I am at that point where I need a quiet day. A day where I do nothing more exciting that watching the toadlets, read a book in the boneyard. I need to be a creature of hushed shade, uncurated by clocks. – #MattAdams, 1981

Once you've seen tombs described as 'dream incubation chambers for the dead', it's hard not to think of what those dead dreams might be. Are they remembrance of sunlight or an enfolding of shadows, rage against brick thwarted access to the corpse paths? – #MattAdams

There are spots on the Marshbone Road where certain trees appear as sentinels. Watching the horizon for invisible invasion, any leaking from the hollow hills. Places whose beauty cannot overwhelm the sense of sleeping threat getting ever closer to waking. – #MattAdams

The longer you spend in the county, the easier it is to recognise a Wood Sprite's home tree. Even without offerings, there's a palpable sense of being watched, an atmosphere of potential ambush. What some Hooklanders call: 'an air of ancient unease'. – #MattAdams

There was a rumour that the Government used to monitor all those stone and wooden sleepers for signs of omenic twitching. If the Department Recording And Measuring Anomalous Statues (DRAMAS), existed once, there’s no official record of it now. – #MattAdams

There are certain places that you have an instinctual understanding about. You know they home old ghosts. Know they whisper in Latin, the Middle English Chaucer would recognise. Places that twist and coil inside you, scratch at your bones. Places that warned you. – #MattAdams, 1982

I have spent enough time in Hookland to not be surprised by seeing a car park sign that reads: ‘This area liable to sudden flooding. Parked vehicles at risk of partial submersion and Stay Below Vandalism.’ - #MattAdams, 1981

When you find a room of chained books in Weychester Cathedral that isn't marked in the official guide book, you hope you've found its fabled Black Library. Of course, all you've discovered is that the Deanery is baiting traps for cathedral crawlers. Tricky pricks. – #MattAdams

I've discovered a Hookland dialect word I'm sure is going to be useful: Beambefar – the surprise which may await behind a tree or may emanate from a tree. That surprise might be a Woodwose or a Wood Sprite or it might be something much more peculiar. – #MattAdams, 1982

Sometimes you come across a church tower and you go: "Oh course it has haunted bells. Look at it! How could it not have haunted bells?" I suppose it is in moments like that you realise Hookland has claimed you. – #MattAdams. 1981

When you find a feral church you can't help but be enfolded in its greening. You sit in communion with its ghost congregation and feel an ache for old rites. You come to understand that some sites were consecrated long before they ever knew the cross. – #MattAdams, 1982

Certain statues seem to throb with pagan power. Cast bronze caught summoning something simultaneously old and vital. As if the folk who commission such things were involved in a conspiracy to enchant the streets and parks of Coreham. No wonder people leave offerings at their feet. – #MattAdams, 1982

C.L. Nolan called pew ends 'England's wooden bestiaries' He was of course right. In carved claw and wing, they tell all the chimeras of the land, all the wonders that scratch and fly around our imaginations. They are a folkloric library. – #MattAdams, 1982

Every further day under this government makes me expect the imminent waking of England's sleeping knights. - #MattAdams, 1982

I hadn't appreciated what C.L. Nolan meant by being able to know a feral church by its 'enfolding sense of green communion' until I entered one. Now I get it. Step into a feral church and there's a palpable sense of something profoundly old, profoundly untamed dwelling within. – #MattAdams, 1982
