Healthcare was so good that approx 300 people from Mauritius got scholarships from the Romanian government to study medicine in Romania to help with the lack of doctors in Mauritius.

First time I remember visiting, 17 years after independence, Mauritius was shockingly poor. Now its moved up to middle income status. Incredible transformation, and it all happened after the British left.

I went to Mauritius to look at what happened during indenture period for Empireworld. Labourers might start at 4 am, moving boulders in punishing heat, and were used for ploughing and hauling, work better suited to animals. Women got up at 3.30 to cook for families before doing the same labour...

We stayed at LUX Grand Gaube Resort in northeast Mauritius. Spacious rooms, a 200-meter beach that feels private, and INTI, the island's best-rated restaurant.

We skipped the queues at Mauritius airport and got champagne instead. Jetprime's VIP service made us feel like rock stars from plane to lounge.

...without which being off the estate meant a fine or prison. By the end of the indenture period, Mauritius had gone from the place so many went that “Mirchias” became Indian shorthand for indenture to the least favoured destination of all. So yeah, this is the empire that Braverman wants to praise

A remarkable new species discovery - the Mauritian Tidal Trapdoor Spider Idioctis marevallum lives in fossilized worm and mollusc burrows in inter-tidal coralline rocks (it also engenders the sort of spider headlines we like to see!). www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I’m reminded of the documentary on the Clearances,* where the then Duke of Sutherland justified them, & how they went down, on the grounds that “their decendents had a much better life in Canada & some of them have told me that!”

* not as bad as the indentured labour system in Mauritius, still bad.

It's bad enough when you see valorisation of horrendous, dangerous, dirty work like coal mining when historically every generation of parents hoped their kids would be the first who didn't need to go down the mines

But this about *indentured servitude in Mauritius*?!

Unhinged.
