maxmind is wrong most of the time that it matters
the other wrinkle in all these "we're banning porn for UK users!" and "bluesky isn't available in mississippi" stories that no one seems to be talking about:
geo-ip is inaccurate as shit, even before VPNs get involved. you can't just detect where people are with any kind of consistency

So the @decentsamples.com website is under some sort of attack. We've had 100k+ requests in the past 12h with many different suspicious URLs. They're coming from 4k+ different IPs. MaxMind says all of the IPs are from @cloudflare.social. Wonder how the attackers are doing that?

Yeah, using maxmind or the like is pretty tried and true. It is an imperfect technology, but a lot of companies use IP geo-fencing for it currently.

this just reminded me of when MaxMind got sued by a couple from Kansas because their software was using the lat/long coords of the couple's property as the "dead-centre" of the US and therefore a default position for geo IP lookup, resulting in mass chicanery. arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...

"Error" implies that they're a lot more complete and better-maintained than they actually are - maxmind (I think the most-used?) is fairly quick with updates when requested, but that does need action from the IP space owner.

Even the MaxMind GeoIP database is copyrighted as compilation and that is much much closer to just a bunch of facts about public stuff than the weights of an LLM.

this isn't immune to spoofing! you can call the api directly with a vpn or proxy and determine a desired latlong in range of the maxmind lookup for that ip. could use some cf anti vpn feature perhaps?
