There's an American tropical fruit in the Appalachians that tastes like tropical starburst jelly, and every other part of the plant is toxic, only the ripe jelly center is edible. The skin is even toxic.

It's the mayapple or American Mandrake, Podophyllum peltatum

We have TONS of Mayapples back in our wooded area!!! I love them, they are so cool. They've slowly been spreading over time, too.

The one on the left was taken today, and I don’t water this area so it’s getting dry. The one on the right was taken in May and looks like a forest understory.
