Another Cambridge street painting. I think these old views of people dressed up and thronging the streets in celebration of their exams being over are a bit of an antidote to what's going on now (original sold a long time ago). Direct watercolour no predrawing.

This scene depicts Mayweek in Cambridge (which of course is in June) when students arise from their studies and obtain a tuxedo or a ball gown (not gender obligatory) and emerge blinking into the daylight and attend a May Ball to get wasted.

One of my Cambridge May Week paintings and pastels. This one wasn't signed and dated when I photographed the original in 2009 but I would have signed it before it was sold. This one was quite large and is oil pastel with ink penwork and gouache scrubbed over it.

A Cambridge street scene during May Week, a time in June when the exams are over and the May Balls take place. I never went to one (not really my scene) but I did design a poster for one of them. Still have a few rare copies so I'll find a photo and post it.

These watercolour drawings pursue the May Week Cambridge theme. They were somewhat experimental and use acrylic ink with a dip pen over thick paper lightly primed with gesso.

These Cambridge scenes of people dressed up to attend May Balls were very popular but I won't be revisiting this subject matter because times have changed (I have some old ones that might get a little reworking). People don't stand around like this anymore: they rush to their destination with phones clapped to their ears. I suppose some might find them elitist but bioscientists etc are just throwing on a posh frock to celebrate reaching their finals. This is on stiff paper and combines gouache, oil pastel and acrylic ink applied with a dip pen. I find you can scrub water-based paint over oil pastel and then work over it (you can't do that with soft pastel)

One of the themes I explored to a very full extent was people meeting up and queuing for may balls. Having drawn these locations many times I took a lot of film photos and used them creatively to recompose the figure groupings.

I painted many Cambridge street scenes before I started peopling a series with the colourfully arrayed attenders at May Balls. It was a great theme for a while, of its time, because people seem different in recent times post-pandemic: less traditional and less inclined to dress up and stand around in the street unselfconsciously chatting. Anyway I don't want to overplay a successful theme.

watching the #Cambridge #MayWeek fireworks from my house. a little sad that it's probably my last #MayWeek experience after having been here for nearly five years. plenty of festivities going on this week as students celebrate the end of exams.
