I still assign this article - The McDonaldization of Academic Libraries and the Values of Transformational Change - as an optional reading each semester.

It remains, without any competition, the most commented on optional reading every single time.

George Ritzer’s “The ‘McDonaldization’ of Society” (also available in a book-length analysis) is a good overview of just how prominent this phenomenon has been in America, since industrialization.

It's deeply frustrating to me that connecting us all could make it easier to find the amazing, unique, wonderful things that aren't for everyone but instead the commercial drivers for the modern internet push towards a bland McDonaldization.

Oh, yeah. Topic was McDonaldization and surveillance.
Classroom projection system down so no ppt. Just whiteboard and markers.

I LOVED IT!!!!

There’s something in writing on the board that forces a slowdown. Since students aren’t rushing to copy text on the slide, they’re more engaged.

It felt so natural again. Both energizing and enervating. Joy.

At a furry con, you can enjoy a nightclub rave experience without the McDonaldization & less recycling of music. While travel costs can vary, a con registration fee is more economical for the amount of amusement that weekend you’ll have vs. a $35 nightclub cover fee for a few hours of the same env.

Given my previously stated desire for authors to lean into their own special weirdnesses and let their unique freak flags fly, you can perhaps guess how I feel about the idea that the people outsourcing their thinking to spicy autocomplete are contributing to the McDonaldization of culture.
The growing use of AI large language models (LLMs) could make human writing, perspectives and reasoning more alike, according to a research paper that raises questions about creative diversity and authorial voice 👇

I think it depends on how you define camera. Technically speaking, a phone camera is still a camera that happens to adopt the principles of a fast-food restaurant: it’s efficient, affordable, and predictable.

Bland new world: is AI making us all think the same? www.nature.com/articles/d41...

"...might be homogenizing both culture and cognition."

I also worry about the "McDonaldization" of our thinking & creativity, where "efficiency and predictability" lead to "more uniformity." ⚠️

This trajectory towards blandness is reinforced and sustained by the increasing tendency to allow algorithms to mediate the choices we make. This has the effect of training perspectives to converge in “a strong pull toward sameness”… “McDonaldization” of society theconversation.com/how-algorith...

I think the McDonaldization of HE is missing out on the fact that uni finances depend on its clout. Its clout depends on its scholarship, exclusivity, and hierarchy. Work like a fast-food chain, get a rep as a fast-food chain while YOU CAN'T scale like a fast-food chain.
