In fact, the McDonogh Three technically segregated New Orleans’ schools first."

Yet another thing not taught.

I hope I've done this justice.

I've covered New Orleans schools for 15 years. The post-Katrina injustice done to John McDonogh's students/teachers is one of the most heartbreaking stories of state-forced chartering.

Love to the legend Ruby Bridges on her bday, & also a shoutout to 3 other local heroes - Leona Tate, Tessie Prevost, & Gail Etienne (the McDonogh 3) - who integrated McDonogh 19 Elementary School here in NoLa in 1960. The TEP Interpretive Center in the Lower 9th, on the same site, is named for them.

Sixty-five years ago today, four first-graders desegregated New Orleans's public schools: Ruby Bridges at William Frantz Elementary School, and Leona Tate, Tessie Provost, and Gail Etienne at McDonogh 19 Elementary School. They faced violent mobs and threats to their lives. They were 6 years old. 🗃

Banks was valedictorian of McDonogh No. 35 High School before earning a master’s degree in education from Xavier University in 1935. During her career, she served as the principal of Thomy Lafon, McDonogh No. 30 and McDonogh No. 38 schools. https://ow.ly/91Hl50ZbYG8

65 years ago schools in the American South were desegregated and in 1964 the #CivilRightsAct was passed. Now, in 2025, there are forces fighting to undo it all.

History saw the McDonogh three overshadowed by Ruby Bridges but they did their part. Gail Etienne is still doing hers!

Don’t forget about the other three girls who started the same day at McDonogh No 19. Leona Tate, Gail Etienne, and Tessie Prevost. I recently watched a really cool video series on the New Orleans four!

4. Much like the stories of Rosa Parks and Claudette Colvin five years earlier, the McDonogh Three's story has been buried into history.

But here's the thing:

All four of these women are still alive, including Ruby Bridges. But it just goes to show that if we neglect our stories, they disappear

Sharing again ~ because I am so grateful to be entrusted with John Mac alum and teachers' stories. And it is ... definitely weekend-read length.

Fuck me, I guess I’d never seen marching bands battle. Just watched Edna Karr and McDonogh 35 for the past 45 minutes on Mag by Whole Foods. That was one of the coolest, most intense things I have ever seen. I almost cried, no fucking joke.

NEW: I spoke with Gail Etienne, who actually desegregated schools before Ruby Bridges, but in many ways her story has been deliberated ignored.

Her voice is only becoming more needed as the state of Louisiana attempts to remove school desegregation orders this year.

Four little girls integrated New Orleans schools, with three going to the McDonogh No. 19 Elementary School. Bridges was the only black child to attend the William Frantz Elementary School. Federal marshals escorted the little girls to and from school for their safety. /3

Dorothy Prevost was a courageous civil rights matriarch

When her 6-year-old daughter walked past white mobs on Nov. 14, 1960 to desegregate McDonogh 19 Elementary School, Dorothy Prevost was terrified.

3. Ruby Bridges wasn't the only six year old little girl to integrate New Orleans schools that day. The McDonogh Three - Leona Tate, Gail Etienne, and Tessie Prevost - also integrated the all white McDonogh 19 Elementary School.

They were all known as The New Orleans Four.
