Pultizer Prize winner, Larry McMurtry. Oscar winner (for best adapted screenplay Brokeback Mountain), Larry McMurtry.

Destined for obscurity, sadly.

LARRY MCMURTRY ISNT TERRIBLY FAMOUS
October 12, 2026 at 6:25 PM
I can think of three massive movies based on McMurtry books
October 12, 2026 at 6:28 PM
“emotional conflicts and unrequited love” being famously absent from Larry McMurtry novels

Just FYI

Jacobin's Larry McMurtry / "MEN reading novels about MEN" article that you're all hate-trafficking was written by Ross Barkan

aka the guy who got fired by nymag for at least 67 instances of plagiarism, mere weeks ago:
Looks like Ross was Barkan up the wrong tree
October 12, 2026 at 3:03 PM
Right? Like McMurtry wasn't subtle about Woodrow Call being a pretty shitty, emotionally stunted man.
October 12, 2026 at 12:29 PM
i am 100% certain that the author of that jacobin article has never read mcmurtry

I have good news for men who would like to read books like those published Hemingway, Carver, and McMurtry
Eagle-eyed readers might note the almost total lack of hyperlinked evidence for this paragraph's many sweeping generalizations.

Among them, that young readers want TOUGH GUY cultural objects that are cruelly being denied them by all these meddlesome women, when, in fact...

My only comment on the Jacobin essay is that I think it's interesting that Larry McMurtry is the example of man-literature par excellence; his son James McMutry is one of the greatest living lyricists, and despite a very hard-edged cowboy affect he often centers his songs in female perspectives.

Review: New biography of Larry McMurtry reveals much about elusive writer's life
David Streitfeld's impressive new biography, Western Star, has a subtitle that alludes to a notable part of his story: The Life and Legends of Larry McMurtry. Note that word, "legends." It is

Larry McMurtry? More like Hairy Mc...Mc...Murtry
October 12, 2026 at 9:16 PM
When asked, Larry McMurtry himself suggested “Duane’s Depressed” was his best novel.

supporting the McMurtry praise, great lyricist, and when I saw him on tour a few years ago he had a Vietnamese-American female guitarist as his intro who praised him for consistently uplifting early career artists esp women

does anyone ever actually read the sequel to that book, do you suppose? Mr McMurtry makes it very clear those big ol macho cowboys don't get a happy ending.
October 12, 2026 at 2:19 PM
Ross. just because you didn't know about Larry McMurtry until he went viral doesn't make him obscure.
October 12, 2026 at 4:10 PM
That obscure author, Larry McMurtry, who sold 4 million copies of Lonesome Dove and wrote such other obscure works as The Last Picture Show and Terms of Endearment, that disappeared into the mists of time.
October 12, 2026 at 2:43 PM
And, not the point I suppose, but McMurtry was pretty good at writing strong female characters!
October 12, 2026 at 3:40 PM
the biggest Larry McMurtry fan I know is and always has been my mother. "books for men" my foot.
October 12, 2026 at 4:12 PM
oh my God I started reading the Jacobin piece on Lonesome Dove, Larry McMurtry, and gendered reading.

it's INSUFFERABLE
October 12, 2026 at 4:09 PM
Absolutely this. Larry McMurtry was very clear that he was writing an anti-Western that would counter the glamorized old West myth
October 12, 2026 at 2:49 PM
Good grief: Larry McMurtry co-wrote the script for Brokeback Mountain, which was a huge (and excellent) movie in 2005.

It's true that in recent years, readers on YouTube started promoting Lonesome Dove but...
October 12, 2026 at 3:03 PM
Agree. McMurtry wrote women with complex characters. The reader would have to erase or ignore them to miss that.
