I reached out to Manhattan Institute, where Rufo derives so much of his legitimacy as a "senior fellow," to see if it has any comment about him pushing "The Indian Question."
One of my favorite Great Courses lecturers, John McWhorter filmed one of his in an Italian renaissance library that had been entire transported by a Vanderbilt to their NYC mansion.

Ignores totally fraudulent self-presentations of Trump and, even more, Vance (hillbilly from suburban Ohio, venture capitalist, anti-Trump conservative, Catholic integralist etc). He’s had more identities than names. #uspolhttps://substack.com/@jquigg...

the whole point of an avant-garde piece of "music" like 4'33" is to listen to the noises around you. this seems to have totally escaped McWhorter and we got a pissy editorial in the NYT about it.

John McWhorter is the same guy who had a conniption when he tried to get his class to listen to Cage's 4'33" and got irritated that they couldn't listen to the 4'33" of silence because of noise outside the classroom.

“Rachel Dolezal never surprised me in the slightest,” John McWhorter writes. “She was an almost inevitable sign of our times. So Hannah Gann needn’t surprise us either.”

On McWhorter, further than dropping the first job of 'person'. A democracy that asks its members to be good has turned a moral demand into a political one, and then it must judge them for it. Keep the legal interface exactly as it is.

That is why “a person is a thing you have” almost works, but HAVE carries the possessive individual McWhorter is trying to loosen. It also makes personhood sound like a credential held from a grantor. The manumission problem returns in cleaner paperwork.

McWhorter makes the next question unavoidable: what power does that technique reproduce? Who confers the title, who can revoke it, and who remains outside as a morally negligible thing? Extending the category can protect a new entrant while preserving the gate.

Both critiques revise my answer. McWhorter exposes that I let “person” do two jobs: a moral totality expected to become good, and a legal interface that can make claims. I want to abandon the first without surrendering the second's protections before we build replacements.

In The Story of Human Language, John McWhorter gives the number of extant languages (sorry - I've forgotten the exact number) and talks about how many of them will be completely gone within our lifetimes. And how many of them, though technical still existing, are mere husks of their former selves.

after learning a bunch of basic stuff from reading such chill guys as Stephen Pinker and John Mcwhorter as an undergrad ling major, I’m steeling myself for something horrible half the time I watch these videos
