1/2 #speciesaday no. 500 is Snow Flea (Boreus hyemalis). Not a flea but a mecopteran (same order as the scorpion-flies). Winter-active, I have seen them only twice in 2019 when I went with Tony to find them in the Wyre Forest in Feb, then stumbled on 1 in the suction sampler in the Roaches that Dec.

🎄 For #InsectAdvent Day 5, meet #Mecoptera 🦂

#WinterFact: ‘#SnowFleas’, a #Mecopteran of the family #Boreidae, aren't actually fleas - The name is often used for a species of #scorpionfly ❄️

#WorldSoilDay: Their presence is an indicator of healthy soil rich in organic matter.

1. Mecoptera

This group with unique proboscis, related to flies and fleas(Perhaps includes the latter) were very diversified until the mid-Cretaceous, and it is suggested that they took an important role in the pollination of gymnosperms, before the bees or butterflies.

I have 88 species that I made up for my world, some similar to pre-existing mythological concepts, some completely new, many named after insects because I had an autistic entomology phase as a kid, lol

Hmm, maybe this can be an impromptu "ask me anything" about my fantasy species? #writingq

15. There are 88 species of people in the Pentagonal Dominion. 24 of them are based on insects in the real world because I was obsessed with insects when I was a kid. I named them all after irl insect orders (at the time) Some have become deprecated :<

Been really busy lately, but I still want to start posting!!

So here’s a really cool insect from my very first night! Arachnoscelis is one of the few rare carnivorous katydids, with shockingly vibrant colors ✨

All my species are listed here. As you can see, many of them are named after insect orders, or rather, the orders that existed when I made these in the mid-2000s😭 (Homoptera got merged with Hemiptera. A few others got changed or renamed)

Next, Martynov (part I). This section covers the description of several mecopteran species from Permian layers in Arkhangelsk Oblast.
He starts with the new Mesochoristidae (now Permochoristidae) genus Agetochorista, to which he describes many species :
Agetochorista ornata (Sheimo-Gora, Iva-Gora)
