The internet has a neutral effect on democracy. It has brought the benefits of accessibility to the people, by sharing more information like political discussions. But it also brought along the issue of polarization and misinformation being spread and impacts media literacy. #Media180Friday900

Surveillance capitalism is an immoral method of generating profit. Despite corporations being required to put Opt-In policies to data mine, many may be uneducated of what "accepting cookies" actually means. This allows corporations to exploit accidentally shared personal data.

#Media180Friday900 Corporations should not use surveillance capitalism to generate profits, as it directly removes one's autonomy and ability to give consent to their data being shared, due to hidden tracking, forceful agreements, detailed profiles on individuals' preferences, and more.

I think that the Internet should have greater regulation, but I don’t believe Section 230 should be entirely get rid of. Social media companies should assume more responsibility for harmful content, including cyber bullying, misinformation, and dangerous posts.

The internet has had a net-negative impact on democracy due to the rise of misinformation and disinformation and the amplification of extreme voices through surveillance capitalism and echo chambers. The internet still empowers people to be more informed citizens (an affordance) #Media180Friday900

I think the Internet needs some regulation, but too much could hurt free speech. Australia's ban shows that laws can be hard to enforce, while the AI music lawsuits show why platforms may need accountability when creator work is used without permission.

The gramophone shaped youth culture, like Atari and Nintendo by bringing people together. Teens shared records and expressed their identities through music. Gaming consoles also built friendships through shared games and interests, and helped young people connect. #Media180Friday900

Hot takes and short-form video content are features of social media platforms, acting as a ridge by politically polarizing the U.S. While the working class are often not the creators, our views are what catapult extreme content. Regular conversation doesn't go viral like outrage. #Media180Friday900

The Internet has had both positive and negative effects on democracy. It gives people faster access to information and lets more voices participate, but misinformation and algorithms can make decisions irresponsible. Overall, its impact depends on how responsibly we use it. #Media180Friday900

I think Section 230 should not be abolished, but I do believe the internet requires more regulation. As technology advances, laws should advance too to protect users from misinformation, inappropriate content, or comments that may have negative effects. Society should come first.

Abolishing section 230 should never happen as it would lead to a decrease in the spread of information and awareness as platforms would resort to increased censorship to avoid legal responsibility. Counterpublics could especially be harmed by not being able to speak out on issues.

The internet has had a positive effect on democracy because it allows for faster access to the news through TV and social media apps. The negative effect the internet can have is the fact that misinformation can be spread with AI videos and spreading incorrect evidence about data.

These corporations should not be allowed to profit from our personal data when they're literally collecting our searches, clicks, and interests without us even knowing how that information is being used, because why should our privacy be the price we pay just to use the internet? #Media180Friday900

I do t think that the internet requires regulation and we should abolish section 230 because of the reason being for the safety of people. how big company's like apple, google, and facebook. use our data as profit. and how minors get exposed to violence, and not safe work. #Media180Friday900

I believe the rapid development of communication technologies has had both negative and positive effects on democracy in the nation. On one hand, social media provides platforms for people to spread advocacy worldwide, but these platforms are subject to censorship.

I think surveillance capitalism is a violation of privacy because companies collect a lot of personal data to make money. Even though it can make ads more relevant, people should have more control over what information companies collect and how they use it.

Payola never died, it just got a new name. Radio promoters once paid DJs to spin records. Univision paid $1M to settle an FCC inquiry in 2010. Today, labels still pay for playlist placements, streaming promotion, and influencer TikTok pushes. Pay-to-play still shapes what we hear. #Media180Friday900

I feel the Internet has had a positive impact on democracy because news travels way faster and citizens can access sources and information more easily. However, the Internet and AI has allowed for fake information and very realistic news to spread, which is quite harmful. #Media180Friday900

I believe that the internet has had a net-negative impact on democracy due to the rise of malicious and false content and the amplification of the most extreme voices. Even with the drawbacks, the internet can still empower everyday people to be more informed citizens. #Media180Friday900

I believe section 230 shouldn't be abolished but should be regulated because platforms would infringe on freedom of speech if they were to removed content due to legal concerns, but they should regulate very inappropriate content that could cause harm to others.

I disagree. I believe the negatives of the internet outweigh the positives for democracy; misinformation and disinformation manipulate public opinion greatly, and echo chambers, personalized feeds, and more lead to increased polarization. #Media180Friday900

I like your point because the internet spreads false information and amplifies extreme voices. However, it also helps people stay informed and participate in democracy. I agree that the internet has both positive and negative effects. #Media180Friday900

I agree because there needs to be a balance between regulation and free speech. The AI music lawsuits show why creators should be protected when their work is used without permission, but too much regulation could also limit new technology.

I like your point because surveillance capitalism can make people feel they have less control over their personal information. Companies should explain what data they collect and how they use it. People deserve privacy and a choice about sharing their information. #Media180Friday900
