-- "The curtains are just blue!" & "Let people enjoy things!" & "It's not that deep!" literally anytime someone applies even the mildest mediacrit lens to anything (including fandom) & IT'S CRAZY-MAKING.

Pretty sure that "purity culture," when used as a dismissal of mediacrit, especially of fanwork, has devolved into "any acknowledgement that media created in a culture with baked-in kyriarchal biases may be flawed in any way."
January 15, 2024 at 10:16 PM
Being too afraid to turn a nuanced mediacrit lens onto fanwork in case the purity police get ahold of it is just another form of self-censorship.

take responsibility. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. take responsibility. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. take responsibility. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. take responsibility. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. take responsibility. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. #mouthwashing #mediacrit
What is the mouthwash for in Mouthwashing?
A cigar is just a cigar but a bottle of mouthwash is so many things all at once.

Student post for #MediaCrit: Ashley O’s persona wasn’t just in the episode of Black Mirror, they marketed her to us IRL! Miley Cyrus released “On a Roll” … and it’s on YouTube under the name Ashley O. #BlackMirror #AshleyO #MileyCyrus #OnARoll

Looool I guess I run in mediacrit circles to the point where I'm like this, but for narrative analysis (sorry!): xkcd.com/2501/

also, very true observation about the mediacrit skills. I remember every fandom had people who wrote long, detailed, complex analysis of canon, but now that you mention it, I realise i haven't seen this for new fandoms to this extent

They're literally only useful in terms of fan v author intentions and i can't stand that's it's become a stand-in for in-universe v out, lumping together mediacrit and authorial intention in one category etc. better words are available to us!

Literally any mediacrit chops I have is from listening to people smarter than me and occasionally doing random research. I once collected published papers about the racial empathy gap and how that is exhibited in / exacerbated by racism in media, but that folder died with my old computer 😭

Yeah I think my concern is: if the pendulum swings back to long-form media, will audiences/fandoms be able to sustain interest after letting their attention spans atrophy? Are deep meta analyses spanning several seasons going to be extinct bc those mediacrit skills died out for lack of material?
August 6, 2025 at 5:06 AM
"why don't you know that phrase already! It seems to dovetail with your mediacrit philosophy so well!" Well you see I have a visual art degree, not a media studies degree, so.

Haha, I am Bad at discussing polyam stuff from a mediacrit lens, but I can def talk about my fave polyam ships all day long (most of my Archive is polyam fic).

BRAIN WORMS! today's question on everyone's lipssss: do you actually have any free will in Fallout 4? if you're into attempted murder and narrative design OH BOY uh, well, i have that #fallout #mediacrit #brainworms
Do you have free will in Fallout 4's Commonwealth Wasteland?
Fallout 4 may have particularly weak writing, but it also has a lot of weak world-building and weak quest design to back that up.

Student post for #MediaCrit:

S1m0ne places critique on audience interactions with celebrities, showing how audiences can become so obsessed with a person’s image that they disregard other key factors about this person. S1m0ne’s fame rose so quickly that she became well known for being well known.

Student Post #MediaCrit: In The Social Dilemma, a mother buys a lock box to try to minimize phone use and make the most of family time. It cannot be opened until that time has passed. Would you try this? What kind of boundaries do you think are necessary for parents to set regarding screen time?

Student #MediaCrit thread on The Social Dilemma:

The social dilemma presents important representations of human agency and tech corporations in the lens of what is and what can be humane technology.

We watched the Coded Bias documentary in #mediacrit this week. I’m enjoying the back channel discussions we have in Discord as we watch.
I think some of the most important points that were brought up in this documentary were that AI has some racial and gendered biases in it, that come from the biases that the creator may have.

Similar to the AI, in circle time, Simone would rather sit on the hard floor than the carpet because she doesn’t want to get too close. #MediaCrit
