Ahead of World Environment Day, we’re highlighting a project generating creativity and hope from waste in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Mohamed A Kamara, the co-founder and manager of Freetown Innovation Lab, is recycling discarded tyres and other waste, transforming it into bespoke designer furniture - and empowering young people to get involved. “See it, avoid it, report it!” We reached more than 5.4 million Afghans with our mine awareness content – that’s 1 in 3 people. Our work’s goal was to shift the conversation, giving people the confidence to challenge risky behaviour. To measure impact, we tracked the knowledge, attitudes and practices of 400 people in high-risk areas over several months – including their exposure to our media content. The more of it they consumed, the more they discussed the risks—and the more likely they were to say they would take safer actions. “I teach children younger than me not to touch different explosive ordnances, because they are dangerous.” Kapital, a schoolboy in Tigray, used to collect and sell explosive ordnance (EO) left following the conflict in the region. Through our project he learned about different kinds of EO and the dangers - to avoid stepping on or burning them, and not to throw stones or touch them. BBC Media Action supported a risk awareness campaign in the Afar and Tigray regions in northern Ethiopia, changing people's attitudes towards EOs and raising awareness about their dangers. Aisha, affectionately called Mommy, is blind. She plans to marry someone who accepts her desire to have children when she is ready. She says it's important to plan when to have a child, and how much space to leave between babies. “Having a shared perspective on child spacing will help secure our children's education and development”, she says. Our IFPLAN project in Nigeria used radio drama, information and discussion programmes and social media to raise awareness of sexual and reproductive health and rights for adolescent girls and young women with disabilities.
