Giant sea monsters are trending with the newly described Cretaceous "kraken"*.
So for #FossilFriday, a better known super predator named after myth: Livyatan melvillei!
A true terror of the Miocene oceans, I was thrilled to see original fossils and a skull cast of this killer sperm whale in Lima.

Reconstructed skull of Livyatan melvillei, the giant killer sperm whale. To the left, a fossil jaw fragment, part of the holotype. In the background, an illustration of a dark-blue, adult Livyatan attacking a smaller whale from below. Exhibition at the Natural History Museum of Lima, Peru.

The dorsally crushed holotype skull of Livyatan melvillei. Exhibition at the Natural History Museum of Lima, Peru.

Diorama depicting Livyatan together with other prehistoic and modern marine superpredators: Otodus megaldon (an older, Carcharodon-based reconstruction) and a giant pliosaur below it, and an Orca and Great White shark to the right

Yes!! They found a juvenile. Good picture of it in the boat (see article). It is, in fact, a meg. Learn about this AND THE PREVIOUSLY EXTINCT SPECIES in April's Jawsome Monthly Chomp with the Megaldon in focus.

The Megalodon Exists!

Megalodon shark found alive for the first time in a fishing net off the coast of Japan. A 9 ft juvenile meg shocks the world and DNA tests prove it’s the real deal.

Jack - Oi, Shiny!

@oishinythings.bsky.social

You did mention that! And for some reason, I read it as pre-date, as in "Megaldon was there first". Please excuse my eyes.

But yes - if it was there, we'd see at least some survivors of attacks with matching scars, and we don't. (I really want Nessie to be there, but sadly...)

They have been spotted playing with Storm (Stormttek not Spla_Storm if that wasnt confusing enough bc Black Lotus also has a StormHero)

They were gonna play in #SplatWorldSeries qual 2 with him but DQ'd right before bracket start (tragic). Lets hope thats not a trend 😟

Artifice spotted playing in Megaldon Monday with Stormttek

Great Dying Survivor

@cannotthinkofone99.bsky.social

Maybe if you didn't mean to say carnivorans outcompeted terror birds or sparassodonts, or that Livyatan was a predator of adult megaldon because the latter was dumb and instinctive, maybe these parts should have been reworded to avoid those implications (or even address those assumptions outright).

Vanplitwo Ambassador

@ignightroad.bsky.social

Well, he'd be a dolphin. Dolphins are only 6-7 feet long. Majority of the cast are whales in the AU so they'd be proportional. In order it's Riku: Megaldon, Ven: Great White, Vanitas: Pilot Whale, Roxas: Orca: Repliku: Tiger Shark (I think), Replitwo: Goblin Shark, Sora: Dolphin

Here's one of my most favorite fun facts about sharks. I also accidentally omitted some words so check the alt text if you want to see the correction. Follow for more if you like sharks! :)

Image that reads:
"Daily Shark Bite: Fact Number 5
When most people think of prehistoric sharks, they think of the megaldon. But one of the less thought of is the helicoprionidae family, which includes most infamously the Helicoprion and less [infamous] Toxoprion sharks (plus mamy others) that had bottom jaws that look an awful lot like circular saw blades. Although sometimes the Helicoprion is also depicted as having a snail shell type bottom jaw. Pretty terrifying."
