But they’re not actual turkeys.... they’re megapodes (big-foot birds).

Males build giant compost mounds up to 4 metres wide and use the heat from rotting leaves to incubate the eggs. No sitting required.

Turtles are the most obvious analogue, though amongst the birds the megapodes build nests of vegetation that incubates the eggs for them - ie they don't need to sit on the nest 24/7 - and those mounds are superficially similar to known dinosaur clutches.

SOOTHING BIRD FACT

Megapodes, bizarre turkey-like birds found in Australia, Indonesia, New Guinea, and on other islands in that region, bury their eggs in mounds and then abandon them, turtle-style. The chicks hatch, dig themselves out, and are immediately self-sufficient. 🪶

always felt there's something very video game about megapodes just building mounds on the ground and then more megapodes pop out nearly fully functional

10) Megapodes (multiple genuses)

I like these guys because of their unique nesting/incubation strategy: making massive mounds of decaying vegetation. The heat of fermentation keeps the nest warm, though some species do use solar or geothermal heat instead depending on environment.

🪶 The real cost is much higher: 10 MILLION trees, including ancient Pleistocene-era forests over an area 1.5 times the size of Paris will be wiped out. THOUSANDS OF SPECIES of native megapodes, macaques, leatherback turtles, birds, reptiles, and amphibians will lose their homes.

Our time on Palawan has come to an end, finding all but six of the island’s endemic birds in the few days we had searching, with others spent snorkelling or kayaking to random islands, one of which had two Philippine Megapodes! Onwards to Bohol now… #BirdingAbroad

Let's expand this discussion beyond birds.

A wildebeest calf can walk within minutes of birth & outrun a hyena within 24 hrs of birth.

The megapodes (mound-building birds) are born with flight feathers fully intact & can use these for short flights within days of hatching.

Been a busy few days in Borneo for @bwntours.bsky.social We heard Megapodes and saw Mangrove Whistler & Blue Flycatcher on an island before a serious drenching getting back and the collected paddy Crakes, Rails, Tree-Swifts and Grassbirds once we had dried out. It was a good 1st full day.
