The truly interesting one was the six Class 56's that were acquired by NSE for Meldon ballast workings, and went through Doncaster Works.
33035 and several 73's had gained NSE livery, so there was speculation the 56's would too!
In the end, they gained Civil Engineers livery instead.

Steep wooded valley with large metal railway viaduct at far end Curve of viaduct top along old railway line with rising trees and engine shed in distance. Half empty reservoir with steep sides and tide lines like tree rings in the dry stony sides left as the water level drops.

railway is a single line.
Meldon viaduct is listed, but can't carry rail anymore, so a brand new viaduct will have to be built.
Re-opening the railway between Tavi & Oke, as a mainline route, would also kill off the Granite Way.
There are no easy answers. However, no more sections of old railway

This is a valley & gorge that has seen human use since prehistoric times. The remains of stone-age round houses, 18th century mining operations, 19th century quarrying & 20th glass-making. In the foreground is the remains of a bridge carrying a tramway for 19th C quarrying - in the background is the magnificent Meldon Railway Viaduct, constructed of cast iron in 1874 and once carried the LSWR main line from London to Plymouth. It's now a cycleway.

Sometimes the landscape asks us to pause, to look beyond the fence before taking the next step. At Meldon, the quiet geometry of timber and wire frames the rolling moor beyond, where the journey continues at its own pace.

Walking this ancient track beneath Meldon Viaduct, it wasn’t the holloway itself that stopped me. It was the intricate pattern of light and shadow cast by the branches overhead. For a few quiet moments, the woodland turned an old path into something almost abstract.

Thank you, Charles. I never thought I'd pray for rain on Dartmoor; usually we have too much! But we certainly need it. The land is so terribly dry and heat-baked right now.
