the strong do what they can; the weak suffer what they must
Photorealistic historical reconstruction of the Melian Dialogue in 416 BCE. Two Athenian envoys stand at left in red and dark-blue cloaks, facing three seated Melian leaders in ochre, cream, and blue-gray garments. The principal envoy gestures calmly with an open hand. An elderly, gray-bearded Melian leans forward and responds, while his companions watch tensely. A small wooden table holds a pottery jug and two black cups. Sunlight enters the plaster-walled chamber through an open doorway, revealing a spear-bearing guard and Athenian warships on the blue sea beyond.

And it's so frustrating that The Silmarillion is the one that most people struggle with, because THAT'S where most of the amazing women are! There's Lúthien and her mama, Melian, of course, but there's also Varda and Yavanna and Nienna and Arien and Aredhel and Haleth and Idril and Elwing!

Morgoth being unable to Create is pretty fundamental, I think. What he did even with the dragons was corruption and, like, gene-splicing. I always assumed Glaurung & Ancalagon were embodied fire-Maia that, like Melian, had kids somehow. Orcs too: meddling at the DNA level for heritability.

Great discussion. Reading the Republic against the background of Thucydides has a precedent in Simon Blackburn’s Plato's Republic: A Biography (2006). He uses the Melian Dialogue (“the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must”) to clarify the stakes of Thrasymachus's position.

Not a single one of these people could tell you about anything that happened in the Peloponnesian War outside of the Melian Dialogue

Doriath exists because a king stopped walking in a forest. Thingol saw Melian standing under the black trees of Nan Elmoth, and by some accounts neither of them moved for years, under starlight alone, long before the sun or moon.

We did read about Rome. “They create a desolation and call it peace.” We didn’t skip over the Melian Dialouge in The Peloponisian Wars and understood Thucydides wasn’t endorsing the Athenian argument that “the strong do way they will and the weak suffer what they must.”

oh gosh this is so embarassing please no one tell @mckelvie.bsky.social too oh no id hate that i would perish
but yeah for 20 years now ive just been like "the objective worst person, the biggest villain in all of Tolkien is thingol" and subsequently i have have never really considered melian in any of this, but she is eru. she is of eru she sang the song. how can the one who formed the notes ever feel anything but joy in seeing their children play any note themselves? in honour, in deference, in dissonance, in mockery, in anger in jest in night or in cold, they're all so beautiful, the microtonalities of youth and impermanence, that rage against the oncoming of forever, they know not to where they go and honestly neither can i but i perceive what they will pass through immediately and know that nothing beyond that veil is a thing of fear, they mearly fear the veil itself, so sure, do little wars, youll figure it out in eternity and laugh about how cute you were later like its just encarnate bodhisattva stuff i do not place anything in melian's hands. a kid asked for help and so you provide the help and watch them learn the lessons of their choices because you know they will get to try again or will learn better later, in ways they cant even know yet. and like dont even get me STARTED on who finally puts an end to this injustice in dagor dagorath makes you really come to see melkor's side of things. feanor IS kind of a fucking asshole and its because he was spoiled. took how many atrocities and kinslayings before he learned his lesson? oh, he basically never did? whoops. explains why Galadriel needed to get away from his fucking ass for so goddamn long and just bang weird twinks who pronounce Cs like Ks its very kute of them

En Doriath, Melian le enseña sabiduría y artes de protección. Interrogada sobre Aman, Galadriel reconoce la huida y el robo de los Silmarils, pero omite el Juramento y la Matanza de Alqualondë. Melian percibe esa omisión.

I mean they’re also the sorts of people who point to the Melian Dialogue with the intended takeaway of “and this is why you must submit and surrender to Athens”.

Like the whole thing when Adar called Melian a Vala and everyone was up in arms about it, and then when you provide an actual quote from the book where Tolkien called her “of the people of the Valar“, there are crickets lmao.
