Mellite, also known as honeystone, is a rare organic mineral formed from fossilised plants.
It can be crystalline or amorphous, and it's easily scratched, because it's no harder than synthetic plastic. Technically, it's an organometallic compound, aluminium benzenehexacarboxylate hexadecahydrate.

Amorphous mellite looks like cloudy honey! It's found in the same places as lignite, aka brown coal, which is usually formed from compressed peat. Lignite is also an organic mineral, and it's sometimes cut and polished into the gemstone, jet (as in jet black).

Mellite is a fairly rare organic mineral that forms as a secondary mineral. Organic minerals aren’t all that common, and they don’t always look very spectacular.
