When Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was 12 years old, he was introduced to the famous German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was 72 years old at that time. Goethe was impressed by the young man's musical talent and, during a visit, asked Mendelssohn to improvise on the piano for hours.

Fanny Cäcilie Mendelssohn Bartholdy (November 14, 1805) was born in Hamburg, Germany. She was the eldest child in a culturally affluent family. From a young age, Fanny received thorough musical instruction—first at home, then from teachers such as Ludwig Berger and Carl Friedrich Zelter; her younger brother Felix Mendelssohn shared much of her education. Fanny was a prolific composer, producing over 450 works, including Lieder (art songs), piano pieces, chamber music, four cantatas, an orchestral overture, a piano trio and quartet, among others. Despite her talent, much of her music remained unpublished in her lifetime, and societal norms often constrained her public role as a musician. At times, works by her were published under her brother’s name. In 1829, Fanny married Wilhelm Hensel, a court painter. The marriage did not curb her musical output—she continued to compose and also hosted “Sunday concerts” (Sonntagsmusiken) at her home in Berlin, inviting friends, extended family and musical peers. She died from a stroke on May 14, 1847 in Berlin; she was 41. Her brother Felix died less than six months later. After her death, much of her music was either unpublished or wrongly attributed, but in recent decades there has been growing scholarship and performance of her work. In 2018, the Fanny & Felix Mendelssohn Museum opened in Hamburg to honor both siblings and their musical contributions.

Am Leipziger Gewandhaus wird Robert Schumanns 1. Sinfonie, die „Frühlingssinfonie“ uraufgeführt. Dirigent des Gewandhausorchesters ist Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, das Werk wird vom Publikum sehr gut aufgenommen.

Q: What is the correct name to use for this composer? Hensel? Mendelssohn? Mendelssohn-Hensel? A: I am not the authority on what she should be called, but I will try to offer some insight. She was born with the name "Fanny Mendelssohn". When the family converted from Judaism to Protestantism, they added the name "Bartholdy" and she became "Fanny Mendelssohn-Bartholdy" (this is sometimes referred to as her birth name even though "Bartholdy" was added later). Later she married Wilhelm Hensel and became "Fanny Hensel". In popular use, you will see "Fanny Mendelssohn", "Fanny Hensel", "Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel", "Fanny Hensel Mendelssohn", and occasionally "Fanny Mendelssohn-Bartholdy"; there is little consensus. In academic literature, especially in recent writing, "Hensel" seems to be the most commonly used. This site favors "Hensel" because that is the name Fanny used in her daily life and on her compositions when she published. Occasionally I use "Mendelssohn Hensel", typically on introductory pages where recognition of the Mendelssohn name would be useful, and on scores that Hensel wrote before she was married. I recognize that I am not consistent on this site! I'm not too worried about it. Over the years of running this site, I have shifted more toward "Hensel" exclusively as Fanny has become more widely recognized.

Für ihre Hochzeit am 3. Okt 1829 mit dem Hofmaler Wilhelm Hensel in der Berliner Parochialkirche komponierte die Pianistin, Dirigentin und Komponistin Fanny Mendelssohn Bartholdy das Präludium für Orgel zum 3. Okt 1829 F-Dur.
Entgegen ihrer Befürchtungen unterstützte Hensel ihre Kunst in der Ehe.

Der Hofmaler Wilhelm Hensel heiratet Fanny Mendelssohn Bartholdy die Musikerin & Komponistin in Berlin. Als Hensel 1829 aus Rom zurückkehrte, ernannte man ihn zum Königlichen Hofmaler.
Das Paar gehörte bald zur führenden kulturellen Schicht Berlins.
